Why do you keep saying "9 wafers for a breastplate?" It's three, isn't it?

Amen to this change, DF should be challenging. The more challenge the better

Depends on what color your ore is.

Correct. They're saying it is 9 because they don't know how the mat size tag works. The number of bars/wafers required to make an item is the material size/3, rounded down, with no item costing <1 bar/wafer.

Of course, if you're going to do that, you might as well just change the adamantite smelt reaction to produce 10x the normal number of wafers or something. Or just make a free-adamantite reaction.
True enough.  The point is, there's no point in being enraged about the metals.  Just mod the raws.   :)

True for iron, true for copper, true for steel.  And don't they say that the exception proves the rule?

Like half of my forts don't even have access to candy. It's just not even there to be found. The times that I have seen it it's usually just a single super tiny spot. I'd be lucky to even have a single dwarf fully equipped in it, or even half equipped. Any idea what the cause of this lack of candy is? I usually use 3x3 embarks with advanced worldgen, so it's probably something I changed without even knowing. Having it using a bunch of the material to make something is fine - as long as you have even have some access to it.

No access kind of defeats the point of making it use more per.

Edit: I'll try regenning the world with a couple more layers at the bottom and see how it goes. Thanks. :)
Turns out I had forgot the save the layer changes I had made before so there was only 2 layers at the bottom on that world. No wonder I couldn't find any. <.<

Of course, just because a spire is there, that doesn't mean it's easy to get to. It could be pretty much sunk in the magma sea. Creative use of obsidian casting can help in this sort of situation.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Equipment material costs are fine, I think. My current 3x3 fort is swimming in adamantine and steel, and this is without cheating. I mined over 7000 tiles, most of which from a single spire

Just put a lot of layers between cavern 3 and hell.

There is one problem with it I think, though, and that's with furniture. It takes 3 metal bars to make a table. It takes 1 ore to make a table at the masons's shop. Both tables are worth exactly the same. You lose money and materials by smelting rather than carving normal rock, which doesn't make much sense.

Metal value needs to be boosted, or ore decreased, I think. Smelting giving you less total items is fine I think, but it should be worth more than carved rock.

to be honest, I like this way better. I usually go with small forts but 4x4, 5x5 embarks. I often got as much as 7000 of a particular ore, often more, in the location. If all metal items were just one bar, I'd have a 500 strong military clad in the best...

so now I have to decide, add that iron breastplate or make it a copper one. Can I really afford to make it steel? I probably can, but it takes too long. Let's use copper spikes instead of iron ones. Perhaps glass weapon traps are starting to sound good, hm.

Mail has always been superior to breastplates.

Remember when the game updated around this time last year?  Metal became suddenly scarce?  And everyone's like "How am I gonna field a military with less than 9,001 clusters of magnetite?!"

I need to find my quote from that moment...  It was something along the lines of "shut up, dwarf up, tighten down your +kitten leather cap+ and go beat the goblins to death with a training axe."

You're all soft.  If your military relies on ore surplus and supercheap armor, then you obviously don't know how to actually field a military.  Get back to your roots.  What does a dwarf need to fight?  A dwarf needs nothing to kill.  A good pair of teeth and they're out biting limbs off.  Give them a wooden shield, a leather helmet, copper axe, and let them loose on the enemy.

And most of all, remember: quantity is a quality all its own.

@aerial moving gambling device
If raw modding is free game, then we could just drop all the material costs to 1 :P

Ah... how I fondly rememeber back to the days of one of my earlier embarks which contained a whopping zero metals...

The only weapons I had then were the ones that I could pry from the cold, dead hands of goblins that my dwarves beat to death. Of course for every goblin that died its lash would kill a good twenty dwarves, but Armok cares little from whence the blood spills.

All of that aside, however... I am completely stupified that people seem to forget that there are some remarkably useful bits of weapon and armour that can be made of just wood and bone.
