Try:

CXCXC
XXXXX
CXMXC
XXXXX
CXCXC

where C=coffin, M=magma and X=wall. This is a tower though, and this is replicated across around 20 Z-levels, give or take a few. Huge Gravetower. Made about 5 of these for one fort. (P.S. All stone/coffins must be made of granite or a similar dark-colour.) Getting the lava up there is pretty hard and one of these towers can take up to 2 years.

I have generally been pretty laze with tombs, but I want to try something like a multi-z-level chamber with:

X: up-down stairs
0: coffin
_: channeled space

Even z levels:
_______
_X_X_X_
_0_0_0_
_X_X_X_
_0_0_0_
_X_X_X_
_______

Odd z levels:
_______
_X0X0X_
_______
_X0X0X_
_______
_X0X0X_
_______

Oh my, that would be a unique setup.  Rather like a stack of janga tombs!  Don't tip it over =D

Here is my tomb set up:

XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX

Where Xs are coffins. Can't say I'm a man of elaborate tastes when it comes to graveyards, but hey, it will be FUN when necromancers show up!

I tend to use this, rotated, mirrored, and tesselated as needed with the occasional stairwell, statue, or marker thrown in in leiu of a casket, I think it makes for a nice catacomb effect over time.

when a dwarf dies, i just pull the bed, cabinet, and coffer out of his/her bedroom, replace them with a coffin and two statues, and throw em RIGHT back in.

That's what I do, but 1 deeper and add doors that can be locked.  I had a lot of fun in one of my first forts, when I had these catacombs in my trap hallway, and forgot to lock the door.  The goblins hid in the graves for weeks, curious thing it was...

So what's wrong with stuffing all the corpses in the empty mineral veins like I do?

It's because you keep forgetting the coffins, man!  That miasma sucks!

Heh, in some fortresses I'll use the empty veins as catacomb hallways, putting all the coffins on the sides... seems fitting for dorfs, somehow.

Of course, I suppose the most fitting would be to cast them in obsidian rock after death.

Constructed walls are airtight.

...but I do use coffins. Few things in the game beat the sight of a hundred dwarves rushing down a narrow corridor, each carrying a decomposing piece of one of their friends to drop into a newly-built vein-crypt.

I had a thought recently. What if, once I'm done mining it for the loose slade, I just use one of them spoiler houses as a crypt?

Man all these designs and thought into graves. Makes me feel lazy. If my dorfs are lucky they get stuck in mass graves inside mined out metal veins. I lost a lot of dwarves in my current fort...I mean a whole lot (40ish) before I made it through the aquafier and these dead dwarves are in coffins inside the old hospital. And since it was dug out in sand, there's shrooms and moss growing everywhere next to the old hospital beds and well. Kinda like dwarven Silent Hill....
