Just to clarify wording on the response - the gamblers in the inn look like professional gamblers, or they look like professionals (i.e. bankers, accountants, lawyers)?  I'm assuming the former as I write my post, but it helps to be sure.

Fortuna was like that sometimes.  One day you were peniless, the next day you were on the run with twenty-five florins in stolen cash and valuables.  The week after that you were up five horses, but a few weeks after that you'd spent so much money that the horses and further looting only got you back to where you started.  Well, jewellery notwithstanding.  And cutting down the 'potential heirs' rate of Talacca by three or four men.  And the whole bounty on your head affair.

Fortuna could leave you in some pretty crazy places, Roderigo had to admit.

Roderigo stabled his horse and took a look at the taproom of the Sour Grape, hoping the wine was better than the sign suggested.  He bought a drink and looked around for the card players or dicers until he found a group playing a local game.  Roderigo watched a few plays of the game until he understood the rules and strategies, then bought a round of the local draught for the players.

They seemed welcoming enough, but Roderigo recognised the keen glint of their eyes and, rather more importantly, the way they rolled the dice and let him take a roll with any dice he wished before playing.  Professionals, like himself.  Well, even if Fortuna turned her favour elsewhere today, it would be good to be amongst like company.

Being a professional, hand in my cavalry sabre to the barman (keep the axe, in case the barman doesn't want to give it back) and retrieve it afterwards.  Introduce myself to the professional gamblers as Roderigo il Bastardo - even if the name means nothing to them, perhaps one day it will.

Gamble straight with the professionals, no cheating but playing skillfully, exchanging a few stories about our experiences on the road and at the tables.  As ever, use the jewels as a medium of exchange and play for as much money as I can milk them of without things getting ugly - they will certainly be doing the same.

Gather a little information about the happenings in Epicea and anything I should be on the lookout for, whether it be to take advantage of or to avoid.

Assuming nothing goes pear-shaped, head on the road towards the Carreran/Lencilian border, keeping an eye out for anything I might have been warned about.

(As I am in neutral territory, it would make sense for any prince to be able to roll for me, I think?)

((Do you really want to go to Carrera, or do you mean Lencil's border with the really hard to spell E-land (Epicea)?

Now that I think about it, it's epic-ea. Not invading there...))

I mean close to the borders of both countries.  I haven't decided which one I'll be heading into now - certainly Lencil eventually, but things might happen in Carrera to make them interesting to visit first.

((if it was a 1 it would certainly be very interesting. And yes, every prince can roll for Roderigo. Of course, they are pro gamblers.))

((Firelordsky, I guess it's not that hard to assassinate the leaders of a peasant uprising, but...))

I did take a long time to get this out. I started writing, then got distracted, got distracted again, and then forgot to do it. You can't say I didn't eventually get there, though.

[5] You give the bartender the sabre in a very convincing manner, you can't be completely certain, but you think that this man can be trusted. You introduce yourself [3] with a flourish, but no one notices your name and they simply wait for you to sit down. [5] Somehow, they don't notice your gigantic axe, so you'll be at an advantage in the opening round of combat, if (when) it comes down to it.

[1] They don't seem too willing to put up large amounts of cash in fact, they probably won't allow themselves to lose more than 6. They're all skilled gamblers, [2] so playing skillfully won't help, but [5] at least they have to common sense not to cheat as well.

4 v.s 1 You win the first few rounds quite handily.

4 v.s 4 The next rounds go by without incident, with you winning some, and them winning some.

5 v.s 6 Alas, the last three rounds go off in their favor, but not by as much as you had them in the beginning.

In the end, you come off slightly better off then when you started, and when the dust settles and your opponents try to write off their losses, you've come up with 2 florins in [6] florins. It's always nice to have liquid assets, and [4] they let you leave peacefully, but they're not happy to have one of their rare losses.

[5] You gather some nice information about the land, but the information you got [1] was that the authorities have heard of your murderous ways. Perhaps it wasn't murder, but you know how the police are. [3] They start to send police your way, but they do it with the sclerotic motion that countries do in a time when policing has by no means caught on giving you a good chance to get away.

You ride your stallion towards the Carrera-Lencil border [3], and you get most of the way there, but on the way, your stallion loses a horseshoe, [2] and can only go at a walking pace until you find someone to put new horseshoes on. [6] And the police seem to be chasing the wrong person, a Rodrigo il Rasterido, incompetent fools. There is a lot of them around though. [3] You find a small run-down inn on the border ((that used to be in Lencil)), and there are a group of three playing cards, [2] but once again, they look quite skilled.

I'm getting Bard's done, just give me some time.

Using my ranger stealth and bow and arrows.

You quickly find the group of rampaging, inefficient, treacherous peasants, [1] but they see you too. It might be something about Lencil being a ton of flat land. ((My luck seems to be rubbing off)). [6] However, you handily manage to mask your disgusting Morwood accent, and blend in perhaps a bit too well. The peasants see you and try to convince you of Prince George's awesomeness ineptitude, but [4] you resist their efforts, but pretend to go along with it.

You proceed to try to find the instigators of the rebellion, and they're pretty obvious, being the ones standing on wagons talking. [2] Alas, you can't come up with a better choice but to simply whip out your bow and arrow and shoot. At least you had the good sense to do it from the back of the crowd... (-2 to chances of escape) [4] A hit! However, you're standing in the back of a bunch peasants that just had their leader shot, and they're not happy.

[6-2=4] Or are they? No, just kidding they're still pissed, but they're not very quick, and they didn't bring weapons to a speech, but that doesn't mean they're harmless. They all pick up some stones and prepare to throw them at you. You have some good sense, and start running, and hope that you can get away. [4] You run as fast as you can, and that's pretty fast, but just as a regiment of archers can't completely miss [3] and rocks hail down on you, with a few peasants even hitting you! [4] Lucky you, no mortal wounds smash you down, but you do take a hit to your right arm and left arm. Being the barbaric slightly-converted Morwood archer that you are, you can take the pain (who knows what happens there), and you hope the surgeon can patch it up... (No penalty though, it's not as if rocks are particularly deadly weapons v.s an arm). [4] ((Good god man, why does everybody but me roll high?)) Your getaway wasn't smooth, and it wasn't particularly quick, but you can certainly run faster than a horde of peasants, and you need less food.

[1] Too bad both your arms are broken (and you can't pull a bow without arms). When you finally get back to Lencil City (it's too confusing to call it just Lencil) you're going to be weak from malnutrition and thirst from your run until winter. That is, winter next year (-2 to activities requiring more work than sitting on a horse. And in fact, that's pretty straining. -1 to anything that requires more physical work than picking up a pen)
