Also, I was talking about Armenian cavalry archers on my last post.

I tend to play very infantry heavy armies, with two maybe 3 units of cavilry mostly to protect my flanks or to hit weakpoints in the enemey army. I have a front line of my infantry, than spred out spearmen incase of enemy cavilry, then usually about 4 units of archers.

Also, I never really use artillery, I just don't see the point of them. I can use skirmishers, slingers, archers, phalanxes, cavalry, light infantry, spearmen, heavy infantry and so on pretty decently, but I have no really good idea on how to use artillery. It seems to me that ballistae do hardly anything and Onagers really slow your armies down.

I assume Rome plays a lot like Medieval 2, so my strategy should make sense.

I never use artillery in field battles, only sieges, waste of a valuable unit spot. I go usually at least 10 (out of 20 max) units of heavy infantry, with 4-5 cavalry and 5 archers, maybe some extra infantry. I've been playing as Wales in the Britannia campaign in the expansion, they have spearmen with 20 defence un-upgraded. I think I have my new favorite unit.

As for strategy I array all my infantry in a line 2 deep (how they auto setup) and group them into 3 groups, left flank, centre, right flank. I put my archers a little ahead and let them shoot up the enemy as they advance and then put my cavalry mostly on one side, but sometimes I split them. Charge the enemy archers when they advance to shoot and then withdraw to charge any flank units I can get into position around.

Rome total war plays similarily I imagine, but it has things like elephants, chariots, skirmishers etc that can really balls up that strategy. Try doing your one once you've got scythed chariots flanking and killing your general.

Siege artillery is amazing in field battles, especially if you shape the field properly. A coordinated cavalry charge can weaken the flanks of the enemy army, leaving just the heavies at the center. You have archers pelt those guys and kite them towards your artillery, which has shells of infantry around it. Artillery devastates them as they come in, and your infantry engages and holds them while your cavalry sweeps into their rear.

Hmm, I might use onagers in one campaign or another then just to test them.

The Timurids bring elephants when they come. Worst fucking battles ever. Also, describe these skirmishers, I've fought javelineers, just hit them with cavalry after you engage the melee infantry.

Tends to be my base army setup, just because I find it tactically interesting. It is pretty easy to just spam heavy cavalry and blow infantry away. Nations with missile cavalry have the added bonus of few casualties while they annihilate enemy armies.

Probably my most successful game was as Egypt, where one plague ridden General with a full stack of desert cavalry (progressively less as they succumbed to disease) held off the repeated advances of Numidia AND the Scipii, by himself, for about 20 years in game. He nearly made it to Carthage before I got sick of how stupid the AI is.

Illyrian Mercs kick surprising amounts of ass for skirmishers. I only ever bother with skirmishers if I need to slow up lots of cavalry or defeat Elephants/Chariots.

Let's put it this way: Rhodian slingers: About as good as regular archers. Peltasts: Very useful against things like chariots and elephants which are usually super weapons. Illyrian: cheap and effective.

Most of these units can skirmish for long amounts of time before being caught unless the enemy uses cavalry, oh and don't even get me started on some of the ass kicking mercenaries you can have.

And then there's bastarnae mercenaries, which are quite powerful. Thracian mercenaries, a good early game front line unit. The spanish mercenaries which are numerous and decent. Rhodian slingers.... Mercenary hoplites, which can really be useful for factions without phalanx units. Oh and Sarmatian mercenaries are pretty useful.

Ok, yeah, I just charge them and then they rout, stupid light infantry. I highly reccomend ayone with Medieval 2 play as Venice, if only for their heavy infantry. Probably the best heavy infantry in the game.

But in Medieval two, you need mobility as well. Otherwise the enemy will just be able to perform hit and runs on your settlements and forces. Bleed you dry.

IIRC conquistadors can beat them :P And I think that when playing an Italian nation it's better to convert castles into cities - they generate MUCH more money, and castle units aren't much better than Italian militia.
