So, have you folks agreed which faction in RTW is the most difficult? Spain? Thrace? (I'd say Thrace is not, played once, easy).
I'd heard that Armenia is before starting the LP (have i mentioned it was blind? At first, later i played the hell out of Armenia OOS), but it has proven to be difficult only at the beginning or if you lose armies left and right. Spain has one good unit from what i remember, should be fun.

You could always try a self imposed challenge as well. Take a side with few, if any, good units, then migrate it somewhere near lots of much better nations.

Yeah, you should impose challenge on yourself. Or if you have the Barbarian Invasion extension, try to play as WRE for fun and profit. No money, revolts left and right and hordes of barbarians.

I highly reccomend ayone with Medieval 2 play as Venice, if only for their heavy infantry. Probably the best heavy infantry in the game.
IIRC conquistadors can beat them :P And I think that when playing an Italian nation it's better to convert castles into cities - they generate MUCH more money, and castle units aren't much better than Italian militia.

I checked and Italian Spear Militia are better than Armoured Sergeants, but VHE kick the ass of those city trained heavies the italians get anyway. In the Fall I might do a cities only LP as Milan.

Is Scythia tough?

No, it's not. Easily defendable, no real dangers at start, horse-only nation.
It can be tougher than the i-win Greeks or Romans, but it's far from difficult.

What makes the Romans so good? I thought they had lame cavalry and no real phalanxes.

Their infantry is the best in the game, they have very weak factions to pick on to begin with, and very very good money makeing areas very close to their starting position. Oh and until the Civil War they always have 3 allies who they trade with, always. While they lack a Phalanx they have no problem getting mercs and their normal spearmen are sorta ok. Their archers aren't spectacular but they aren't terrible and they have easy access to Cretan Archers. Once Marius Reforms happen they have access to Pretorian Cav, which is a good cav unit, not even close to the best, but a good one all the same.

I need to get a copy of Rome... Any news on the LP? We sorta derailed this pretty hard.

I must say, I love the Europa Barbarorum mod. Without it, barb nations are vastly similar.

Hard nations? Hmmn

Romans? No
Greece? No
Macedonia... Don't think so
Egypt? No
Carthage? No
Gaul? Either you die, or you take Rome and win. Not fun for a prolonged campaign
Armenia? Evidently not
Seleucid? Hard to defend yourself, but then, ELEPHANTS, so... no
Parthia? CATAPHRACTS *cough* no
Scythia? Apparently not
Britannia? Defensible position. Some alright units. Would be hard if cap movement dissallowed
Germania? Hard to say, probably not though. Are Zerkers really good?
Pontus? Heavy Cavalry with missiles - not really
Dacia? AFAIK they've got no special troops, are in a poor position with crap economy. Might be a problem
Thrace? Apparently not
Numidia? You can have three territories in Africa (Egypt will take one, but you can get a reb one), have to fight Carthage and Rome, sounds hard
Spain? Wouldn't know, apparently yes XD

I can confirm that Germania is not hard. Only trouble is getting enough people to join your armies, but you can bypass that with mercenaries and diplomats.

It seems that the voters want me to continue, before switching to Spain, so this is what i'm going to do. For now, however, i have quite a bit work to do, thus it will be a few more days before i resume the LP.

As for why Romans are good :
In combat : Morale, Defense and Pilum
In campaign : Tons of income, weak enemies, 3 strong allies

Also Roman general cav is the best cav in game, right there with Armored Eastern General
They have also the best overall infantry in game, but one on one, there are a few nations who wipe urban cohorts out.

Still they require some tactics at times, unlike Greek armies (form a closed C of phalanx and archers, and go take a bath, the AI will kill itself trying to get you)

p.s. One of our generals has "Been in wars" and "Scarred" traits, for a total of +6hp. I don't see how he could die in battle. (aside from a few unique units, everyone has 1hp)
