I tried playing as Armenia on RT:W. I got attacked by about 6 nations after attacking one.

I hate alliances. Then Greece went to war with me after I refused to aid them in their own war.

You will always be attacked by Scythia and Partha right off the bat.
Pontus will attack you after they capture indies in Anatolian Peninsula
Greeks will attack you if Pontus is out of the way
Seleucid and Egypt will attack you if you have any province south of your starting position.

The key is to wipe out one opponent early (Partha)
then roflstomp the most easily defendable nation (Pontus) and invade Antioch to cockblock any Seleucid and Egyptian invasions in chockepoints of Susa and Antioch.
Scythians are a pain, but building archery range and stone wall in Kotais allows a decent garrison to stop them completely.

If you don't roflstomp Parthans in first few turns, you're in a world of pain.

After playing a new pontus campaign, and an Armenian one, I'm going out on a limb and saying Armenia is a much better faction that Pontus. Seriously, the only advantage pontus has is scythed chariots that are good in autobattles. While armenia has cataphracts and cataphract archers. Oh sure Pontus has the bronze shields (take two turns, aren't actually that good) and cappadocians (weaker than cataphracts) but compared to the imitation legionnaires, cataphract and cataphract archers Pontus could be one of the worst factions. The only other advantage to pontus is a good area to get starting money.

Cavalry archers rule, I kited an army of 500 to death with 200 of them, then them and my general unit chased down the enemy general unit benny hill style until we killed him when he ran into a corner of the map.

See Armenia are a lot like Scythia, except they're not barbarians, they don't have constant negative money and have Cataphracts. Your most useful unit is cavalry archers. The same with Numidia really, if you get an army of jav cav you'll slaughter everyone.

Even with Scythia, you can expand to Germania relatively quickly, and then you'll hit a goldmine.

I never really learned how to use mounted archers in any of the games. I never know what to do with them. Same with light cavalry, to be honest. I guess they're useful if you want to run down routing units, or something.

Yeah, I'm not the best Total War player ever.

Cavalry archers = put on skirmish, fire at will, aim them at an enemy unit. Rinse and repeat until you win.

I use light cavalry the same as I use heavy. Round the back, charge, run away, repeat.

Well it all depends on a lot of things. The battlefield, what type of cavalry, what type of phalanx etc.

Heh, I use heavy cavalry to surround the enemy and charge from all sides for a chain rout. Naturally, if the enemy also has a lot of cavalry, this doesn't really work too well. Then I just kinda throw infantry at them until they stop moving.

...did I mention I'm not the best tactician ever? (Though actually heavy cavalry charges from all sides work surprisingly well. The AI is pretty retarded.)

So far my winning tactic has been keeping pace ahead of the enemy and making it rain arrows on them. If they all run out of arrows they make a great trash mob to run over the infantry, too.

I'll admit that my most successful tactics have been with the Franks, in the expansion. 6 units of heavy infantry, usually in a shield wall, 4 archers, general, 2 units of cavalry. Allows for winning.

It really depends on what faction for me. I mean it's not as if you can do mainly phalanx if you're playing as the Romans XD. Also in the expansion I mainly play the Alemanni.
