Let me put it this way.

If you see "Iceberg Interactive" and "space 4x" together? Run away.

So, apparently there was a way to duplicate gems, and the gem marketplace may be being so screwy because it's being temporarily shut down while they work out the exploit.

That would explain the bid for 7 million gems for a steam profile that expires after about a month.

If there really was an exploit to duplicate gems, and those gems were sold on the market, this thing is basically done. Valve is not going to be able to untangle that mess, and it didn't directly cost them anything, so the exploit gems won't be deleted.

So people who bought tons of hacked gems can bid the price way up on everything, and everyone else can't afford to keep up.

Edit:

Sorry, but there have been some issues with Gems and the Steam Holiday Auction has been temporarily closed. The elves are working franctically to get the issues sorted out, and the auction will start again as soon as they're done.

Let's see what they do to try and fix it.

I'm seeing a problem with just rolling back purchases of gems, because they tied it into crafting cards and stuff which some people then sold.

The main problem is illegitimately getting gems to use in the auction, for none steam inventory products.  Ones that do have a actual value outside just steam and valve.

I think the auction is probably the smallest problem- you just have to keep track of the one thing which was duplicated and is being used illegitimately (gems) and all you've got at stake is licenses for a game rather than something more nebulous.

You'd think they'd think about people trying to pull this shit before going live with it.

This whole auction thing is giving me wicked sodium intake issues anyway.
Between the three-day run-up to the first auction round, the "one booster per game, per day" rule, and the people who want games so bad they'll basically resort to counterfeiting.

Might as well wait for the actual winter sale. And there will be a winter sale, because let's face it, there'll be a mass public lynching outside the Valve headquarters otherwise.

Do I understand correctly that at this point nothing related to gems work, but the badge crafting already grants you cards towards the Holiday badge?

Yeah, that's how it stands at the moment.

What happens to the gems after the auction? Are they attempting to create a bit more scarcity in an over-saturated market? May be a good idea to hold on to my cards after all...

Originally it was stated that they would stick around and you would still be able to craft them into card boosters. That said it's unclear what's going to happen now.

Does anyone have any idea if those games actually work? From what I've heard Steam has somewhat spotty record with old games and new computers.

Those are steeper cuts than GOG. That said, I'd pay the GOG price which was still low. Dragonsphere is or has been free on GOG.

night dive is all about republishing old stuff, their games should all be good to go

any of these games that have also been published on GOG have 0 difference between the GOG & Steam versions AFAIK

Not all night dive games work, unfortunately. Most do, but I couldn't get Bad Mojo to work at all, which was disappointing. I was really looking forward to playing it.
