Hmmm, question here, but does anyone know if buy orders will partially complete? Like for example if I say to buy some 100 bags of gems at $.05 each will it start grabbing any it can find 1 at a time? Or will it try to wait until there are 100 bags up for sale all under $.05 and buy them all at once (which would never, ever succeed do to the huge purchase/sale numbers right now).

Just wondering if I should be just making one huge buy order or trying to make a bunch of smaller ones.
You want to make a buy order?

I've actually gotten through a handful of times, you just need to be quick on the entry side (and be patient with repetition as it fails). It was on the interest of that that I was asking. If I can make a single buy order for like 50 bags then I only need to get through once, but if I need to make individual orders than it might take a while. :P

More like bai, order...  amirite?  :D?

If y'all want to discuss this newfangled gem thing at length, you may want to necro the steam card thread.... because this is close enough to card talk that Tellemurius will probably chase you out as soon as he sees it.

It's taking many attempts but buy orders are getting through. It's somewhat counter-intuitive but in order to get the £0.03 bags that are being sold you have to offer more than anyone else is, but you still only pay the £0.03.

Worth noting that, despite the current sale price being 0.03, I haven't bought my 5 bags at 0.10 yet.  Probably because the buy bid has moved up from 0.08 to 0.15.  It fluctuates from 0.11 to 0.15, but yeah.  I don't know if it's first-come-first-serve or whether it goes to people with the highest max bid, but a *lot* of people are buying 3-cent bags before us.

Definite point.

On a last note I'd like to point out that the buy order is the highest offer to buy is matched to the lowest offer to sell, meaning that whoever offers the most will get their item first; at the lowest price.

Edit: Some crazy person just literally dumped 11k bags of gems (11 million total gems!) onto the market at once... they were gone in seconds. XD

Imagine if Valve invested all the time and effort they wasted on the crappy false economy into actually making Steam good via curation and optimisation. That would be a gem worth some value.

It's weird.  On the other hand they show me popular reviews, and reviews from my friends, and tell me if something I've wishlisted is available.

On the other hand they constantly try to sell me stuff I already own.

So, apparently there was a way to duplicate gems, and the gem marketplace may be being so screwy because it's being temporarily shut down while they work out the exploit.

is there any reason not to buy ****tons of gems, and use them to make booster packs, given that cards go for more than the gems do?

There's probably no reason not to do this while the market is still going the way it is.

Though, I think many other people will soon realize the same idea, and torpedo essentially every single game's card market. Or they'll realize that it's cheaper to just make the cards themselves rather than buy them off the market.

Wonder if Valve intended this. This is probably going to violently crash what little economy there was behind cards.

Though, I think the problem lies in why 1000 gems are going for 3 cents in the first place. Unless I'm mistaken, the best items are worth 100 gems and are 3 cents a piece? What's going on here?

Card and gem prices are showing nowhere near enough plasticity to present demand.  Basically, gem prices haven't adjusted to the fact that you can buy loads of games, since everyone's unloading them at the lowest price, which is causing other people to unload at the lowest price since they think that's the only way they can successfully sell, which is basically keeping prices artificially low until the million-or-so sacks at $0.03 finally vanish.

About the only thing I can say is that this whole nonsense inspired me to finally go through my cards and finally offload them.  Not that I had many, since I never bothered with cards or badges, but I've picked up a few thousand gems for cheaper than dirt (but seriously, potting soil dirt can get awful expensive).

On a different note has anyone checked out the weekly humble bundle? It doesn't look like anything I'd pay $25 for, but there looks like a few interesting games at the $1 and $3.45 tiers.

Looks like several decent 4x's in the bundle, though I'll look for a few reviews on each first before picking it up.

Star Ruler is unique and interesting enough. Nothing else on there does things right. You might think 'space bears' but it's just fancy art packaging a lackluster game. Star Ruler 2 is in progress.
