So, Crusader Kings II is 75% off. As someone who's enjoyed EU3, EU4, and HOI3, what do you guys think of it? I was also wondering if any of the expansions are worth it.

Yeah, it's great fun. I find most of the DLC to be worth, personally, especially Old Gods.

If you want to have fun as something other than God-fearing Christians, then yes you need DLC.

I do warn though that Crusader Kings II, because someone must give descending opinion and no one here will give anything but glowing recommendation.

Is purely sandbox in the sense that it has no goals, rewards, or success... You just play it.

The point system is PURELY tacked on and even the manual outright states that the ONLY reason there is a point system is because they thought some people wouldn't like the game otherwise. But it creates a rather sizable weakness in the game because of it (In that large chunks of the game exists only for the points... the points... that don't matter).

Finally, how indepth the game is actually quite shallow once you dig beneath the surface. Absolute lovers will kill eachother and stab eachother in the back because the Random number generator decided that they like their garbage son more. So if you are playing it as a simulation, go elsewhere.

Really the entire point of the game is sort of a "look what I can do!" and THAT is why you should be getting the game.

Which pretty much sums up a Paradox title, and UG stated having already played EU3/4 and HoI3 =P

For another bit of perspective for UG, Crusader Kings is a series that is quite different from the other Paradox titles (and pretty much all other games). Things are far less country-based and far more people-based. When it's this cheap, and since you already know Paradox, I'd say that you should get it, just temper your expectations. Maybe read some AARs, watch a bit of Let's Play before the sale ends, see if you can really dig it. I would also warn about the difficulty curve. Definitely look up guides on how to play or play easy starts, because, at least for me, CK2's difficulty curve was harder that HoI3's. I'd say that it has less depth than HoI3, it just requires a more specialized mindset to really feel out the game.

Also, unlike EU3 and HoI3, but more like EU4, CK2's DLC doesn't unlock all the new features, it just unlocks more parts of the game for you to play. The new features are just patched in (except maybe Legacy of Rome enables Retinues?? Those are pretty damned important actually, for me anyways. The Old Gods enables the 800s start as well, and that's fun).

Neonivek's pretty much right.  It's one of my most-played games, but it's definitely a sandbox.  Conquering the entire map becomes tedious, the game is definitely geared towards playing a kingdom instead of a blob.  On the other hand, managing a large empire is relatively easy - your vassals take on all the micromanagement that a typical 4X game has.  Managing a large realm mostly involves keeping any one vassal from gaining enough power to revolt, along with any invading you feel like doing.

So I love it for the unique vassal system.  It's *not* a 4X game, though.  It's more about marriage, nepotism, and assassination than invasion.  The characters often go stab-happy for no apparent reason, but you can make them stop if you're in charge.  I like to think it represents grudges we aren't told about.

The DLCs unlock new types of leaders like pagans and patricians.  It's as different as Terran, Zerg and Protoss (As long as you don't reach the blob size where mechanics fall apart and they all become the same).  They've got this crazy DLC system where everyone gets the improved mechanics for free in updates, and getting the DLC just lets you play as the faction in question.  The Old Gods is my favorite just for the ability to go raiding, where you send your army around looting the lands of the chivalrous and sailing away just before they catch you.

Guys...

1. Crusader Kings 2 is more than two years old and is ridiculously popular. Everyone more or less knows what it is by now, especially on the DF forums where we live and breathe these kind of games.

2. We have a huge CK2 thread literally on the front page where this kind of discussion would be better served, though it's already been argued before so many times.

3. The game isn't even on sale any more.

Heh, forgot to check when the sale ended, and missed it. Oh well, no big deal. That's good to hear about the expansions, I've liked the more mechanically generous way they've been doing it. I was pretty suspicious of 6 expansions in 2 years (main reason why I held off on buying it until more research actually), but it looks more reasonable than I thought.

Edit: I've always thought of the sales thread as a better place to discuss value as a prospective buyer than the game thread. Worst case scenario 1/4 of a page got spent discussing a game and its monetization, don't think that's a big deal.

The only bad thing about Dwarf Fortress is that it never goes on sale.

It is always on sale. It's discounted by what percentage is unfinished. It will take 14 more years for the price to be rounded up to a cent.

Fun until you become safe. Then it turns into dozens of lootings until you run out of food and drink. It's basically be bored to survive. I expected more with all the time it has been out. You can build bases, but there is no real reason to. I'd stick with Cataclysm. Compared to it, Zomboid is just a pretty way to kill zombies and loot places.

From what I've seen (Robbaz' videos mostly), the building mechanics are rather impressive for the type of game. You can build walls, floors for multiple stories, stairs, gates. Farming is a big thing also, with finding and planting seeds to make different types of food. Crafting is a rather large aspect of the game.

I will say that yes, it does seem that building doesn't have much reason to be done but from a creative aspect it's quite neat what you can do.

Link to Robbaz' Project Zomboid videos (Possible swearing and inappropriate humour).

Can we call it a sale if the game is free?

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok
http://store.steampowered.com/app/283880/
If you download it from the official site you will be asked to donate whatever amount you want.

I won't say anything about the story as I just started and knew nothing about it. I can only say it's related to Norse myths, which is pretty obvious from the title.

A point-and-click adventure and RPG hybrid. Old school sprite graphics with voice acting. Outside combat, the interface is just like ScummVM used in Monkey Island.

You can start as one of three available classes: Warrior, Mage and Thief, customizable stat points and skills. Skills include things like acrobatics (so you can jump), climbing, animal ken, fast talking, herbalism (forage and brew potion), etc.

Combat is real-time action like that in Sid Meier's Pirates; keys used are either QWE or keypad grid, which you can use for attack, defense and dodge. You also get skills and items (keyboard 1-6) to use in combat.

The default setting requires you to keep yourself fed, rested and warm; you can starve, freeze to death and pass out from tiredness. I'm still struggling to find my first piece of food...

Stats and skills have a chance to improve as you use them; I gained some Endurance just by running around in the cold. I literally ran myself to death too, but that's just me being a noob in this game. :p

Yep with a main character who looks like Dawn from Legend of Kyrandia (Or was it Lands of Lore? Ohh well she looks the exact same in both games)
