My favorite thing to listen to while playing DF is usually some quality minimal drone like Eliane Radigue or Eleh. Sunn O))) and Lustmord also make good accompaniment, especially whilst dealing with Goblin sieges. If I'm in a really strange mood I'll crank up the Merzbow or C.C.C.C., but that's just occasionally.

I've noticed that just about anything from the Golden Axe III OST goes well with DF, especially Level 1's theme, "The Vast Field". The Genesis even has (almost) the same FM Synthesis Chip that the ol' Sound Blaster uses (the Genesis uses a YM2151, the SB a YM3...something), which makes it seem a bit more authentic.

Seconded. It rules, though after several years I no longer listen to it, it's still sweet. I even learned to play it once, though I forget most of it now.

The only thing wrong with the default music is that the guitar is beyond the tech-level cutoff.

But, then, so is the piccolo, and dwarves make those by the score.
