I mean people like friends, family, and the random homeless people down the street.

There is a difference between people who can read the asci vomit on your screen and people who just listen to your stories. My girl doesn't see shit. Only smileys and bright colors. But I can still entertain her with stories of my puppy bone swords and handless military.

But to be honest, I have NEVER met another dwarf fortress player.

The only one I've ever met was the one who introduced me to it.

Same my girlfriend is awestrucked by my stories of destroying huge goblin sieges and conquering the caverns but when i show her it she doesn't see the battles only smileys and letters.

I've introduced someone to DF, but he was somebody I only met online, so I'm not sure if it counts. Then I tried to introduce him to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and he hated it so we kinda stopped talking after that.
There is a difference between people who can read the asci vomit on your screen and people who just listen to your stories.

And if deciphering ASCI is a prerequisite for understanding DF, I guess I don't even understand it. Just can't seem to stomach DF or any other game without a tileset.

I am convinced that this forum and a very few others  are the only people to understand this game.

{snip snip snip}

But to be honest, I have NEVER met another dwarf fortress player.

I met one in one of my classes at university.  He only played adventure mode, the sissy...  How undwarvenly.

Dwarf Fortress: It's like the Matrix code. After a while you get used to it and all you see is blonde here, brunette there, red-head there.

My friend (who lives in my dorm) refuses to play adventure mode.  Strange how some people work?

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

That's funny because all i see is lots of forced labor, booze, blood and towers that try to reach the sky. Maybe you're playing a different game than me ;-)

Now that I think about it, I've only met a few DF players and they were my immediate friends. That's probably because people that play DF are of the sort to make friends with other people that would play DF.

We congregate and then are surprised when we're all together.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
