Well come on who wouldn't be immediate friends with someone who does elf genocide and eats kittens regularly.

After an hour and a half explaining what it was to my friend, and then teaching him to play as best I could, he couldn't handle it.

I told him a story about  my epic military dwarf going berserk on my fortress and he all the sudden wants to give it a retry.

I tried introducing one of my friends to DF. He liked the stories, but he got turned down by the graphics of the download page. There was no hope for him.

Dwarf Fortress: It's like the Matrix code. After a while you get used to it and all you see is blonde here, brunette there, red-head there.
That's funny because all i see is lots of forced labor, booze, blood and towers that try to reach the sky. Maybe you're playing a different game than me ;-)
Are you saying you don't see the blondes, brunettes, and red-heads in the game? Because they are definitely in there, and breeding like rabbits. Just hit (v)iew and check out their details.

My girl doesn't see shit. Only smileys and bright colors. But I can still entertain her with stories of my puppy bone swords and handless military.
Same my girlfriend is awestrucked by my stories of destroying huge goblin sieges and conquering the caverns but when i show her it she doesn't see the battles only smileys and letters.
Again, same here. She loves listening to my stories, but when I showed it to her she saw smilies and random letters. I have never met a person who plays DF, tried introducing a friend to it, he has yet to even google it.

But to be honest, I have NEVER met another dwarf fortress player.
I taught my friend the basics on running a fortress and just about everything on the topic of adventure mode, so he plays it a lot.

But you're right, I can entertain a lot of people with stories about random things on dwarf fortress, most who haven't even heard of the game before.

I've met three Dwarf Fortress players. I don't play adventure mode myself, but I do enjoy Fortress mode immensely.

Zack, my boy, practicality - or the lack of it - has never stopped a Dwarf Fortress player before. You want to find a way to play this game without your eyes? Someone here with the know-how will be able to help you and we'll be damned if we let a little thing like the practicality of a solution get in our way.

Even with Ironhand's graphic pack, my boyfriend's got trouble understanding what's going on on screen. But all he knows is that, seeing how addicted I am by the game and the stories I tell him, he absolutely shouldn't start playing. His studies are already draining too much of his time.
HOWEVER. My mom has recently understood what the hell I was doing on my computer all day, and she's delighted by my stories. To the latest story of the nth moron who deconstructed the wrong floor tile and my necessity to make more coffins, she replied "coffins? Are you crazy? Just incinerate the idiot!" even before learning it was possible thanks to !!MAGMA!!. I love my mom.
