We're not in the Middle East to protect Pakistan, now are we?
There hasn't been a large terrorist attack on the west within what, 8 years now?
Wrong. Very wrong.
Let's count what happened in the western world, shall we (No, Pakistan is not part of the western world)? I'll only count those related to the topic at hand, but I do include uneventful and failed attacks.
2002: An Egyptian gunman kills 2 Israeli's on a US airport. Lots of explosions in Israel.
2003: About two dozen attacks in Israel.
2004: Again two dozen attacks in Israel
2005: only 6 attacks in Israel, London bombings prevented.
2006: only 3 attacks in Israel, 2 cases of someone hitting people with an SUV in the US.
2007: 1 attack in Israel
2008: 5 attacks on Israel, 1 failed suicide attempt in the UK
2009: 4 attacks on Israel, Fort Hood shootings
2010: 2 attacks on Israel, Times Square car bombing prevented (in this year there were more attacks made by western terrorist organizations like the IRA on western targets then by middle-eastern organizations)
Surely you're mistaken! Why would the Afghani and Iraqui peoples hate us more than ten years ago?!?!
Do they? Remember that 9-11 wasn't the first attempt to blow up the World Trade Center and that there have almost never been so few terrorist attacks in Israel as in the last 3 years.
Note that I do not propose to shoot people for the hell of it. What I propose is what happened here. If the military or the police have a good reason to think someone may be a threat it's their damn job to make sure they're made harmless in whatever way appropriate. In this case you're dealing with potential armed combatants, operating close to the location of confirmed combatants, in a dangerous zone. It would be foolish to ask if they might just be passing by.
