"a ruse" and "step down immediately after the ceremony" sounds awful lot like Hitler. I mean, not exactly, but you catch my drift, like, "we can control him" Papen and "end the tensions in Germany plox" Hindenburg.

Wow I've been here for over 2 years and just noticed that the room door handles have flathead notches on the outer sides, making it trivial to unlock any of these doors.

Like, "quickly and silently with a thumbnail" trivial.  I almost understand that for the bathroom, but the bedroom...?

Not that I've been locking the interior doors anyway, why would I.  Except when I had family members over.  Even the one I consciously trust - almost without thinking, door got locked as I closed it.  I'm not sure what bothers me more, that I compulsively locked the door, or that it was an absolutely false comfort.

The simple fact that you lock it should make it clear to any visitors that you don't want anyone in there, and it's the thought that counts. It doesn't matter if they're able to pick their way in, because doing such a thing would put you well within your right to kick them out of your house.

A new element has introduced themselves into my household, and thus our circle of friends as well.
So far I don't know them very well and I worry that I am somehow going to offend them. I wouldn't care, except that I have to live with this person now, and unlike that housemate I can't stand, they're actually a good friend of my friends. Hrmmm.
