Also re: Tahujdt, its simple.  "Abstinence education" is code for not explaining to kids how to properly have sex, so that they won't.  Also yes, abstinence doesn't guarantee a lack of pregnancy but generally that would involve rape so its an irrelevant argument.  Or I guess pulling out but its a very dumb definition of abstinence that includes that.

Right, because most rapists think to use condoms if they're properly educated as to contraception. That, and most rapist victims will insist that the rapist wear a condom.

Do they, actually? I don't know, and I'm reluctant to google that to find out.

Also, not explaining to kids how to have sex is not necessarily a bad thing. It may be slightly stupid, because it's dumb to think that they can't find, um, "walkthrough videos"* on the internet, but it's not bad.

*A man who came to speak to my theology class about addictions gave me this euphemism. He said that he referred to pornographic videos and literature as "training videos" and "training manuals".

Ok... I see where your coming from in interpreting what I'm saying but what I mean is that the words "abstinence education" refers to something specific, which is worse than what the actual phrase means.  The rapist thing was just random conjecture on what the tumblr user might have been referring to.

Abstinence education is telling kids "never have sex ever".  There are a lot of problems with this: teenagers ignore this advice, it often involves highly religious fear based arguments (the old dirty toothbrush speech for example), its not actually a bad thing for teenagers to have sex under the proper circumstances.  The one big, serious problem though is that kids won't look up tutorials, or they won't look up the right tutorials, and they'll go and have sex without so much as a condom.  Furthermore the sort of places that use abstinence only education tend to have parents who won't give their kids easy access to birth control, because at its core the issue is stopping premarital sex for religious purposes.

Its really not harmless, in fact its one of the worst things about the US public school system (and this is me who's saying this).  It demonstrably encourages teenage pregnancy and the spread of STDs.

You know I keep hearing this Enigmatic Hat, but I'd like some proof in this case.

Because the one thing I can never get out of my head... is if someone who believes in celibacy is going to break it, why contraceptives would be that abhorrent to them. Especially since I know it isn't uncommon for stupid guys to try to convince their partner to let them not use a condom and these people are often public schooled. In a world where knowledge about condoms and sex is pretty common place.

It needs to be resolved in my mind.

That's solipsism, Max.

Nihilism is where the world doesn't matter*, solipsism is where the world doesn't exist. :P "I think, therefore I am" being the farthest you can go under solipsism et al.

*closely related to existentialism, where the world doesn't matter, but who cares let's go have fun with it~

Y'know, I'd never heard of this stuff before. Apparently humans will not only willingly eat shit, they will eat shit brewed in hot water and pay in excess of $100 USD per pound for the privilege.

It's not abhorrence, it's ignorance. If it is abhorrence, that's because abstinence-only education also focuses a lot on misrepresenting statistics in order to make birth control appear inefficiacious. It's terrible.

I think this is the kind of stuff that makes Neonivek want to knock science down a peg. Science has a sort of mysticism to it to those who don't know anything about it.

Are we talking about bible belt places? Or like... a Christian school in an otherwise pretty diverse area?

Because Bible belt believe it or not scares the living bejebus out of me.

Hey, hot water is rare where I come from and has to be pumped in at great expense from underground hot springs in the mountains. Still, it only costs like ~50$ a bottle, so its a bit of a rip off.

Just from my experience (I usually don't anecdote, but we do this kind of thing here), eastern Washington State. Not a Christian school, public school.

Wait... Public school teaching abstinence? Wow... The United States is different.

Public schools around my parts teach you how to use a condom and contraceptives.

Honestly I don't really put pseudo-science into the same pot as science.

Mind you I guess that would be a reason. Given the only reason Pseudo-science can get away with it is because its "Science-flavored BS" is just accepted rather than scrutinized.

Of course you don't. Not sarcasm. I'm saying that I'd hope that you think that science needs to not be so pedestalized so that people just don't take whatever crap is flung at them under the umbrella of "science".

On the topic of science.  Its its own worst enemy.  It is based in knowledge beyond doubt and in our social world the average person  cant understand that or take the time to properly appreciate that.  Mix in some politics, some vested interest, some strong emotions, and you've basically got all of the world working against science in its purest.

Advancement of technology and social media has fixed some problems only to open up a fresh can of worms on the matter.

re: science/religion: I'm not going to descend into the flaming pits of doom that is the (invariably fruitless) debate about religion, but I will say that people who advocate either topic while knowing little about what they're advocating are infuriating as fuck.

The inherent flaw with science is ultimately that it needs to be filtered through people.

Or rather the data doesn't lie, but that data needs to be interpreted in order to be useful. It is when this information is interpreted that problems arise because on its own data is mostly useless.

THAT and even the basis for something to be considered scientific can be bypassed so long as it is referenced enough. It can be years before people correct mistakes like this. (But that to me is a flaw in the scientific community and not "science"... it SUCKS when this makes its way to law though...)

This is assuming mind you that the "science" involved is flawless.
