Personally, that was my exact experience. Except, instead of the group leaders kid, it was everyone because I had long hair. The whole "No gay leaders" thing plus the fact that any leader who tries to teach anything about tolerating people get mysteriously transferred does not breed a good environment for nice people.

I have a female friend who entrenches herself in the horrible lower echelons of the anime kingdom. She talks about weird shit she found, which half the time ends up being some kind of manga-porn crap. The sad part is I know there's a good person in there buried under a load of manga.

It's based on a mostly-debunked psychological theory that men need a certain degree of conflict in their life to develop normally. Thus, a mother that is too "nice" risks having a gay son. It's absurd, of course.
