I'd never heard of it before. There are a lot of strange associations that meet at this library, looking at the schedule. An association of atheists isn't something I'd think of as existing commonly.

Crochet Guild. Model Railroaders. Faithful Investors. League of Women Voters. These just strike me as odd for some reason.

Why not? Atheists are a minority in the United States and other countries. Having a network of support in your local area can provide simple companionship, especially if everyone else you know is religious.

It's also nice to talk to new people once in a while.  Giving the group a theme like that gives you something to talk about.

Yeppers. It's not like they have a candlelit room in back where they make dastardly plans to destroy Christianity, all the while cackling manically.

Well I hope not.

I suppose so. I hadn't thought of it like that. I guess I have a sort of prejudiced view toward atheists. Like how the only thing they'd like to talk about in that sort of group is hatred for organized religions, or how they're wrong. I just don't fully understand the motivation for joining such a group.

Well if it's anything like other atheist groups I've belonged to/seen, they probably talk about science news, science fiction, nerdy stuff, and yes, a bit of poking fun at organized religion/religious thought, a bit of poking fun at the extremist stuff you see in the news.

From the few that I've attended, the conversation is, "We still being oppressed? Yeah? Let's get pizza and talk video games and anime instead of anything to do with freedom of religion. Hey, isn't Doctors Without Borders cool? Picard was an atheist!"

It left me with a 'meh' feeling.

Please note that poking fun at =/= hatred for.  :)

I wonder if there are any agnostic organizations...

I'm certain we could find some nice fences to sit on.

My friend played Amnesia the Dark Descent for 3 hours before stopping because he found it boring. Note that this was in a discussion about the difference between us in how easily scared we can get.

I think it's more my lack of understanding of organizations that's causing me confusion. And I don't really understand how people behave most of the time, so I don't understand what would occur at any meeting, other than discussing the topic of the meeting.
