It's very up and down. Janeway doesn't have a consistent characterization, for example, and that's just one of the big problems.

So florida has the loony teachers, and texas has the weird textbook editors.
and kansas has the anti-evolution education.

or did that change?
When my high school biology class learned about evolution, there were repeated, emphasized statements such as "it's only a theory" and "you don't have to believe it, we're just informing you"; during this section, we had a presenter come in to tell us about Intelligent Design. Still learning about evolution, though.

People who misunderstand science make me very, very angry.

I don't get why people cling to young earth creationism. There's plenty of creationist theories that fit with the bible and evolution. Darwin himself was trying to explain why Noah could fit all those animals on his ark; there wasn't as much diversity back then.

Because if they admit the Bible is fallible they've crossed a psychological line concerning faith that cannot be uncrossed and the whole thing collapses.

Because the pastor says that the Bible says that the Earth is only 6,000 years old, and the pastor says that the Bible says that the Bible is 100% factual and accurate. Thus, evolution is a liberal Satanic conspiracy and a sign of the Anti-Christ.

I think I hit all the stereotypes there :P

Er, no. Also, wut. That doesn't even make sense! There's a reason most people see the ark story as non-literal; it's entirely impossible with any size boat.

As someone who grew up in a fundie creationist background, these are both quite accurate; and aside from the anti-christ bit, are too accurate to even be called steriotypes. They even poked fun at Carl Sagan's Cosmos! >:(

That's not true. You could theoretically build a boat capable of hosting two instances of every living species, it would just be the largest boat ever made and would be a completely impractical waste of resources that would most likely end up sinking anyway.

It's FUNDAMENTALISM, which has really gained traction lately. People who belive the Bible, instead of metaphors and fables, or stories of great speakers using such to get a "hey let's not murder people" message across, is 1000% FACT and anyone who belive otherwise is RETARDED or SATAN (not worshipping Satan, or serving Satan, ACTUALLY THE FUCKING DEVIL HIMSELF) and should literally be burned at the stake or crucified.

My Dad, raised by fundies and surrounded by fundies his whole life, with fundies being the sole interaction with religion he's had, now belives ALL CHRISTIANITY IS EVIL AND STUPID. So yeah, fundamentalism kind of totally fucked up everything and everyone because taking such faithful stock in a book that old won't ever come back to bite you in the ass...  ::)

Deism should be Americas status quo, I think. You get the neat "Thou shalt not brutalize the neighbor with a carving knife" that science lacks, and you don't get the book burning that comes with the Westboro Baptist Church people. If God really cared, he wouldn't.

Well that's what a history teacher told me back in high school! I haven't read origin of the species, so~

Science doesn't have anything to do with morality, though. Science is about what is true. Were evolution set up by an intelligence it would be unethical as fuck, hence why Social Darwinism is such a bad thing, but as it stands its just a natural process.

Keep in mind though, that the Ark would have been made entirely of wood. We have discovered the upper limit for a wooden boat; it was smaller than most cruise liners, was steel-reinforced, and was only stable at anchor.

It's obvious how Noah got all those animals onto the ark.

He was the only one standing up on the ark. The rest were lying down. It was a construction, so it couldn't be destroyed by any means.
