I wonder if it would be possible to make it biome-sensitive.

Dead? An open source project can't be dead.. maybe undead. It needs quite a bit of work to be usable with the new minecraft maps and the new dfhack...

Source projects seem to me like they can die.  They just make sure they get buried with a secrets of life and death slab for convenient further brain hunting.

And new formats like crazy.  Wasn't this last good sometime before infdev?  I mean there might be a large number of minecraft players nowdays that don't even realize maps used to be finite in size.

Well, there's plenty of people messing with minecraft maps - even in real time when the thing runs. Plenty of stuff to use as a base for further work I'm sure. It certainly can be brought back.

Edit: scratch that. I was fooled by the sneaky pixels and failure of memory... They used stop animation.
Anyway, the map format seems to be known: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2mCDkqXki0

Reading through my post again I just want to throw out there that I meant that it's possible for somebody to revive a 'dead' source project because there's a way to do it, to those willing to put out the hard work, sitting right there handy.  Not so much just necroing a thread which looking back it may seem like I meant.

What I was talking about with what may make it difficult is all the stuff in the code that probably assumes stuff like maximum map size exists when it realistically doesn't anymore.  While the closest thing I have ever done to real programming is a crummy little 1 button fly through space avoiding rocks game, I can't help but think trying to find all the stuff like that would be a very time consuming process.

It would be a fun weekend project I think. The DF data didn't change much, although dfhack changed a bit. The part that does translation of DF tiles to minecraft tiles is probably completely fine and only missing some of the stuff recently added to DF (nest boxes, bee hives, stuff like that). The only part that could be a challenge at all is positioning the DF map into the minecraft world... it would be weird to have a DF fort just thrown into some terrain that doesn't really fit. Like if you had a fort built into a mountain and the converter puts it into the middle of a desert...

Here's something useful: https://github.com/FliPPeh/cNBT
Should make it easier to mess with the map data.

If this app is updated, it needs to take advantage of the vertical chunks mod.

I'd just like to throw out there that this still technically works, as (last time I checked) minecraft will convert indev maps to more recent maps if you throw them into your saves, however one may have problems while using non-current DF version.

You need an older version of MC, too, I'm pretty sure.

Like, indev old.

Last time I checked minecraft converted the maps, though that was around 1.2, I doubt they changed map converting much.
