Isn't gravelkind counter productive? If all your titles get divided, then won't you have massive power struggles if you end up being the owner of multiple kingdoms?

I'm pagan so I don't have a choice.

And yes, that's the problem.  What's the point of conquering England if it's just gonna be a new set of petty kingdoms in 50 years?

There is a very simple solution to your inheritance problem Cthulhu is called, wait for it... murdering every one but your chosen heir!

No but I think if you give your non-wanted-heir sons provinces and leave your heir unlanded, they won't inherit. Not sure, though.
From what I saw, no. Your titles at your death are divided between all your sons. And you can't give land to your real heir before. I think you can somewhat choose with primary titles and such, but I'm not sure. Or it may be : older titles to older son, and so on.

And yes, that's the problem.  What's the point of conquering England if it's just gonna be a new set of petty kingdoms in 50 years?
Have only one heir.
What I do is marry a chaste woman, or with -% fertility. I don't want to have children from my wife, just the bonuses (eventually a guardian for my next children). Then I get a concubine, generally with interesting genetic traits. Once I have one son, I set her aside. It's not foolproof, but it works great. You just get -1 diplomacy for being son of a concubine.
(If you're not pagan, just give a temple to your other sons, and keep fucking)

Since there's also a lot of sucession war if you're pagan, you can have the occassion to get back some titles. Problems arise if you're kings of 2 things, have at least 2 sons, not yet reformed. It's better if you're emperor (at least they'll be your vassals).

I tend to marry my heir to his sister. The usually end up hating each other. I made the mistake of raising them as ambitious. In the end, she has both claimant and ambitious penalty to the marriage. There were no children born from them till they hit their mid-30. You keep saying succession wars tearing the kingdom apart, I keep worrying that the family line would end.

I'm kind of thinking I should just play things out, and not try to game the system.  I can always start a new game as one of the new petty rulers, though as things are turning out I might not have to.  Halfdan died and there's a succession war, but I'm wealthy and can afford bigass mercenary bands to keep things in control.

Damn... this Gavelkind succession is pissing me off, big time. Can I change my religion to Catholic or something?

Try getting a concubine of an organized religion. You should get the option to convert to her religion. Gavelkind isn't that hard to manage, though. Just make sure you have only one king-level (or duke if you're early-on) title so your other heirs won't leave your kingdom. If you can't, some pagans can be locked out of the inheritance by temple grants. And then there's the assasdin's blade.

Sometimes you just get lucky, though (or very nearly unlucky, in this case); my Tengri Khan 'the Great' had five sons - all but one died childless, and all in their 20s-30s, and left me with exactly one grandson. Very convenient.

It's more likely his half-siblings and their family in the court of the Kingdom of Abyssinia get him first. He's heir to that too, see. And all alone. Should be fun.

Well, then try to kill yourself and get twice the territories. Or does it not work like that?

I did actually die, but the grandson's mother (the Queen of Abyssinia) is still alive and young, so that will have to wait. The boy now rules a Khanate of Georgia bordered by megaCumans, the Byzantines and the Abbasids and all his vassals hate him.

I really like Georgia, you're stuck between 3 empires, two of whom got holy war casus belli on you. Fun time. :)

Holy shit, people.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, it is what you think it is.
You are looking at the forces of Munsterian War for whatever. As in, pretty much every single vassal of the former king Ivar II.
But what happened?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Back in the day, when Ivar II was just getting comfy on his throne, his heir was his daughter, Princess Edla of Scotland. I figured 'well you don't get those opportunities often' and married her to my brother. Luckily, I was on good terms with Ivar and he even agreed for a normal marriage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thing is, sometime before his death, he got a son, Sigtrygg. Very shortly before his death, actually - as I'm writing this, the son is a year old. I thought what the hell, let's try one of those faction things. It was the first time I presented an ultimatum as leader of a faction, so I didn't know what I was doing. And bam, Sigtrygg declared war on me. I'm saying 'oh you want war? yer getting war, you fuckin asshat boi' and a cool icon appears at the top. And it shows me 10+ vassals of the former liege that I can invite to war.
I invited every single one of them.

I do not know how this will work, probably won't become the king of Scotland or anything, but still. Mixing your blood is funn.

EDIT: 30 mins in.

We fuckin did it.
The kid obviously didn't stand a chance, but still. 10k allied troops is always a nice sight.
After Edla was placed on the throne, independence factions sprung. And got accepted. So I applied for independence too. And got accepted.

I'm King Gilla-Crist I of Hlymrek, and this game is fucking amazing.
