Swear fealty to someone with the desired culture/religion, and a descision will pop up. Be warned that these will cost a lot of prestige/piety, and you are often limited by who can can swear fealty to.

There are no uber-empires, so he can't really do that.

Can't swear fealty as an emperor, ever.
I can't actually think of a way that you can reliably switch from catholic to orthodox. On the switch side you can always embrace the challenge and bring the glory of Roma to the east. There is a mod which allows you to mend the great schism as a catholic which could be a lot of fun.

If you want to cheat just open the console and type in:
religion orthodox
culture greek

Oh, well, I'll have to wait a generation. At least I used the meantime to make an antipope, wreck Catholic's religious authority and take over the Papacy. I now control the 5 pentarchs things so my son can mend the Great Schism.

Fun fact: You can create a (playable) vassal republic anywhere, by giving a mayor a Duchy.  What are the implications?  I have no idea, I've never played as a republic or had one as a vassal.  Too busy being Norse lately.  My guess is that doing this will give you less levies from that duchy but loads of money, especially if you're in a region that has no competing republics.

Anyway, most of you already know this, but the reason this works is because of the way the game considers rulers.  Each ruler has a rank (baron, count, ect.) and their primary type of holding (city, castle, or religious structure, unless you're a Muslim).  Since both Doges and Mayors have cities as their primary holdings, they are different ranks of the same thing as far as the game is concerned.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

I always try to have one republic vassal. My son did just inherit the Ummayad Republican House though, so there goes one potential heir >.>

Halfdan Hvitserk's kingdom has fallen on hard times.  He started with Jorvik and took Northumberland within like a year because fuckin' vikings, then made some headway into Ireland before he died.  Succession wars and various shenanigans eventually led to an independent Norse kingdom of Ulster which was later taken back by the Irish.  Further wars lost his son, Sigfrid, Galloway and Carrick, leaving him back where the kingdom started with just Jorvik and Northumberland.  When he died in the middle of a subjugation war against the Jyllander kingdom taking over England, the kingdom divided into Jorvik and Northumberland (So we're completely back where we started at this point) and the grandson, Freyr Sigfridsson, lost Jorvik to a pretender his dad failed to imprison.

So my original Kingdom has divided into two little bullshit kingdoms, and I've been knocked down to Chief of Westmorland.  Luckily, neither of the kingdoms have true heirs, so if there were some kind of accident, I would inherit everything.

The same as Muslim emirates and sultanates: it screws over the AI.

This is why I made decadency a lot easier to handle in my own game :)

I love games like that, in retrospect at least. It'd just be boring if I could control all of Arabia from Cyprus in a single generation.

Of course, while it's happening I'm going "OHGODWHYYYYYY *ragequit*" but I'm getting better about the whole ragequit bit~ P:

Wait, what happens if he is your only heir, do you get to play as a patrician or is it game over?

Game over. A feudal dynasty cannot become a republican dynasty, but a republican dynasty can become a feudal dynasty.

It's kinda what happens with norse/tog pagans : you can build up an empire with a single ruler, but it'll most probably fall hard when he dies. Until you reform, where you remove the fall part  :-\

Yeah, I'd get bored if I could just take over the world.  I like the simulation aspects more than the game aspects, so I usually do things the "right" way, rather than the winning way.

I started a faction to put myself back on Jorvik's throne and was winning the war until Scotland used the turmoil to come in and completely take over.  Halfdan is still Jarl, and I'm still his vassal, but now we're all part of the Kingdom of Scotland, except for Northumberland which is still independent.  Maybe I should try to swear fealty to him, I'm still technically his heir.

And Scotland just blew apart.  I have no idea where this is going but I'm basically a nonentity.

My current Norse game started with my one province backwater immediately being subjugated by a Duke who later became King of Norway.  I'm so, so happy I didn't ragequit, this has been one of my most fun games so far.  Despite my first two rulers dying "of natural causes" with no warning before 25.
