Yeah, you get bigger demesne size as you clim up the feudal ladder. Legalism and stewardship helps too.

If you're a duke, you can have vassal counts. And you can form a Duchy if you're a King's vassal.

Having a wife with high stewardship helps a bunch too.

Would anyone be interested in playing a ToG succession style game? I could see taking a couple different approaches with it - either playing successive rulers in the same dynasty, or playing for a set limit of years as different characters on different parts of the map.

I'd be up for it, preferably the 'successive rulers' approach. We could use Ruler Designer to make our custom dynasty, too (if anyone cares - I just got it so my interest in it is probably higher than others').

Now that I've secured a second lifetime term for my dynasty and probably a third, I'm wondering where to go next.  I suppose I could start consolidating power...

Does anyone who's played the merchant republics know how I'd go about doing that?  I've started buttering up the other patricians (or removing them if they're troublesome) to see if I can't tick up the crown authority.

Help the other Patricians grow but not too strong to challenge you. You could always take the trade posts of other republics.

What I did once if get rid of the second strongest dynasty. At this point, another dynasty sprung up, taking over the old rivals' trading posts.

Since the new dynasty has crap intrigue from being one single guy, you can seize one trade post easily, then kill that guy. A new dynasty will come up, with crappy intrigue. Kill them.

At the end, you'll own all your republic's trading posts, and have the only dynasty with many members, so you're bound to keep the lead of your republic.

I'd be up for a succession game. Dunno how good I'd be at it and if there's gonna be interest, but I'm game.

Umayyad always looked like "Umad" to me.

Whenever I see them I try and exterminate the family.

There's an AAR on the Paradox forums where a time-travelling Hitler and cronies take over Germany... in the 11th century. Might be CKI, can't remember.

I once thought of doing an AAR as Recette Lemongrass in a Republic.

Problem is it'd involve a LOT of cheating. And there's always the chance to get assassinated, which would kind of ruin it all (women can't inherit in Republics, so I can't somehow have a child Recette take over).

I just can't stick with one thing.  I'm Halfdan Whiteshirt now, and I just took over Northumberland and took the dude's wife as a concubine.  Fuck yeah, vikings.

I'm kind of confused by Gavelkind succession though.  Is there any way to influence where titles go aside from only having one son?

No but I think if you give your non-wanted-heir sons provinces and leave your heir unlanded, they won't inherit. Not sure, though.
