I'm of the opinion you're screwing yourself if you choose to use many of those fan rules. DWing, liberal interpretation of CS and EP stacking, and healing, and you almost cannot die in combat. The game is much more fun when you're always missing health and don't have more than a +5 Combat Ratio. It's those moments of possibly dying to combat that force you to take alternate paths, that makes for a dynamic replay. Otherwise you're just backtracking to see what you missed and dry humping the known, beaten path. Not so much fun.

If you milk the books 100%, you'll be a combat monster, but there are some fights that push the limits of what you can do with all the combat goodies. They say your CS/EP score shouldn't matter....but by Book 12, if you've been slacking on your CS score, you will feel it. And if you haven't been slacking, you will be evenly matched. My memory of the Grandmaster series isn't quite as crisp, but I recall being evenly matched for most of 13 - 20, even cheating.

Also....Spoilers. This series is all about not knowing, so I don't want the slightest identifiable hints to give anything away (even if it's to spare someone one of those painful, last minute "haha, you're fucked" events.)

It's those agonizing decisions, actually having to second guess Joe Dever, that gives the reading some actual tension.

All I can say is....Book 8, Jungle of Horrors. You haven't experienced real suffering yet mmmmmaaaaaaaannnnnn. And you will hate life as a Kai Grandmaster in Book 13, Plaguelords of Ruel. Plague druids, living in a plague fortress, in a plague forest? Wheeeeeeeee!

Loved this series when I was a kid (played the paper version) but I could never make it past the desert book...number 6, maybe?

I guess I should give it another go!

Shadows on the Sand is #5, and yeah, it can be hard in part 1. It's also one of my favorite adventures though. I love those "white guy in Arabia" fantasy stories.

PS- SeventhSense may! be releasing the Magnakai all in one shot. Here's to hoping. I just pitched in and tracked all the combat for Book 12 for the author. I don't think he'd be asking for that now if he was only planning to release a book or two at a time.

Yeah... chewed through the first five books today as I was going about preparing to pack up.

Wow, were you just extremely lucky, or were you save scumming?
