I'm pissed because I got thinking how far we (Humanity as a whole) could have gotten if NASA hadn't given up on manned space exploration. We could have had people on Mars by now! Gahh!

Mars doesn't exactly have a complex biosphere to screw up... (Microbial life is the probably the most complex thing there.)

Exactly. Banks Orbitals, O'Neill Cylinders, Stanford Toruses (Tori?), all sorts of orbital and space-based habitats.

If we don't screw it up anymore than we have already, it should remain habitable for 'prox another billion years, after which it'll enter a Post-Gaian phase. (In other words, Earth is gonna become a lot more like Venus.)

The space program was really a dick measuring contest, it was more for the prestige than any genuine interest in space exploration. Of course, it is nowadays but its not as highly funded as it used to be.
