Why are my dwarves not chopping wood when I have ordered them? I have idle axemen but they don't do anything no matter how many times I put a tree chop designation.
Did you embark with axes?

Yes, they chopped a lot of trees until now, but they just stopped for no apparent reason

Lazy dwarves take long breaks, that's probably what it was.

Two seasons long breaks? That just sounds weird.  :o

well, it could be that the military took your axes. Or it could be that the warren system has been applied to the woodcutters, either through alerts, or through them being assigned to a specific warren.

First, I would check to see if your woodcutters are carrying axes (v-i overtop of the dwarf in question). Then check if any alerts are on. Then check if they are assigned to a warren. If none of these things are in effect, and you are certain they can path to the trees... then they are lazy.

...and if I link the lever to deconstruct the cage to the same lever as the one that opens the floodgate?
I would think that the hatch and the cage would be activated simultaneously, and the goblin fall to his death, but not sure.

I think you can do the same thing with no hatch though.

Cages can't be attached to levers unless they are (b)uilt. Cages can't be (b)uilt unless they are on a solid floor (no hatches). If you want to drop someone to their doom, then use the pit designation*, or rig a way to get them onto the hatch before you open it.

Man, the wiki page on this is terrible! All it says is: "Animals can be assigned to a pit through the P menu. A dwarf will lead the beast to the pit and leave it there. (If the pit is a ramp rather than a hole, the animal will then wander off.)"  Replace "animal" with "things in cages" and you have it.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Make a floor a z-level above the hatch (perhaps on the highest point of the tower), leave out one square, designate it as a pit. The pit is above the floor hatch, which is in a floor one z-level below the pit.

Should work, I think. Unless my dorfs take those silly goblin prisoners out of the cage before they're well and at the pit.

Wait...that'd take them out of the cage anyway, thus removing any need for a floor hatch in the first place.

Confusing...

One of my miners had an accident that left her with both her legs broken and a broken arm. I eventually managed to get her patched up so she can walk around on her own. All 3 wounds are infected and she suffers extreme blood loss, though. She is incredibly quick to heal, so that might help.

I'm very new to the healthcare system. What are the chances she will survive this and recover? Should I assign her a coffin?

if she;s already stitched up good and can walk around then there's a very good chance that bleeding has already stopped and she should eventually recover.

the goblin siege is not attacking, its just standing there, on the corner of the map. in a little group

this is the first time i have ever had a goblin siege, is this normal? they do attack dwarfs if they get too close, but then they just stand there, continuing to do nothing...

My dwarves won't cut down trees. I clicked 'd', 't', and then clicked the trees I wanted cut down, but nothing happens. I have 4 "laborer" dwarves that cut down trees, mine, farm, and forage, so I know it isn't a problem with skills. And I know it isn't a problem with equiptment either, because I have 2 copper axes.

It's a problem with labors. You can only have a dwarf mine or cut trees, because they have different required tools.

What is the worst edged weapon? In other words, what should I use if I want my adventurer to poison my enemies to death with the various and deadly venoms my fort is buying from the dwarves? I can make any weapon in the game except scourges, and any ammo. I'm thinking blowdarts.

Blowdarts will leave you pretty defenseless in close combat, though. Unless the combat acts fast enough to kill the creature in a few turns. And then there's enemies that can't be poisoned. Y' know, bronze colossus, probably.

Personally, I'd go for a dagger, for style points, but that's just me.

Also, I have caught two draltas, which is, y' know, cool, but I can't seem to butcher them. The dungeon master never showed up so I can't tame them either. What can be done about this?

Style is a good thing. I still have to choose which venom I want to use though - GCS (paralysis, suffocates smaller creatures, including humans), GDS (rots central nervous system), or helmet snake (pretty much every symptom in the game).

EDIT: You kill them, then butcher their corpses.

Just killing them...I never thought of that.

I guess I could do the same with the goblin prisoners...
