Should a Marksdwarf uniform include a Buckler, or should it have no Shield/Buckler specified?

To clarify: Marsdwarfs can use shields just fine. You shouldn't use bucklers because they have a worse chance of blocking. If you ever get a one handed marksdwarf he will even hold both in one hand.

So... Uh... My bowyer trainee just switched from sparring attacks to lethal attacks with his iron scourge and killed his sparring partner. He isn't unhappy, so what happened?

Technically, the shield wouldn't have to be "held", per se. Could be strapped to his arm.

"Oi, Urist McMarksdwarf, where ya goin' with tha' pig tail fiber rope?"
"...ah've only got th' one arm, ye fuckballoon."

On an unrelated note, do serrated disc traps need to be reset after they're triggered, or can you hook them up to a lever and repeat them? Also, do creatures with [TRAPAVOID] also avoid traps that are actively being deployed? Should I expect kobold thieves weaving artfully between spinning discs with sharp edges?

Serrated Disk traps are like any other weapon trap... they attack every (non-TRAPAVOID) creature that crosses them, until they jam. Then they need to be unclogged. As far as I know, you cannot hook them up to a lever.

TRAPAVOID doesn't avoid active traps like an upright spikes/lever combo. Nothing does.

Oh. Well, even if they can't be hooked up to a lever, I guess it'll be fine. Not as if I'm expecting kobold ambushes.

...just a shame I won't be able to use 'em to gank the elven caravans.

Also, do you need a dongon mastor to train wolves?
Yes, but you'll never get an immigrant dungeon master and the game doesn't recognise ones you appoint yourself. You need to go into the raws, open creature_large_temperate.txt, and change [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET] in the wolf entry.

...Are you sure? Deon's Dungeon Keeper worked perfectly fine, and it was an appointed noble.

Can you engrave a slab to him?

No, thats what ive been trying to do. Thats what i've been saying -- theres no Olin Zuglar in that list. Not under dwarves, goblins, elves, or otherwise. Ive checked it so many god damn times. This fort is completely unplayable now. Is this really all being caused by one stupid ghost that came from no where?

At least to prevent this from happening again, you might create a backup and check the legends. What does it say about dear Olin?

It says nothing about dear Olin.
from the legends, a search on all characters and beings including the word "Olin" in their name:
http://img251.imageshack.us/i/olin.png/

from my current fort; Olin Zuglaralath, Ghostly Macedwarf.
http://img834.imageshack.us/i/olin2.png/

There is no dear olin. There never was an Olin. Olin is a double phantom, from the depths of a hellish nothingness, come to ruin my beloved fort, as a ghost that never was.

I tried it in vanilla with some captured alligators and an appointed DM. They didn't appear on the kennel list until they were changed to regular pets.

I've never played Genesis, but I suspect that there is no [PET_EXOTIC] tag in the raws. I'll go and download it...

...And indeed, not. Except for green dragons, which are exotic mounts. I think that's an error.

If you want to use the traps as a sentry, you could just set a row or two of training spears and set it going constantly. Your own dwarfs shouldn't really be bothered by it. Or, I just skip the other traps and do exclusively cage/spear traps, and hook it up to my danger room lever.

How far does noise travel across Z-levels? In other words, how far down/up from workshops should living quarters be constructed?

workshops make no noises. Mining/building construction/tree chopping causes noises of 8 tiles. Actual combat's noises are 16 tiles and people bitching at each other in the hall cause 4-tile noises. Do note that all these noises pass through wall and torment every sleepers within range.

Question: Is there a way to build a wall or floodgate from above? I managed to accidentally dig a hole in the side of an adamantine vein and let a bunch of lava come flooding in diagonally.
