I've tried x-ing it and re-ordering them to build it it always suspends it. :(

Regarding pets -- will a dwarf eventually adopt an available pet even if they do not have an innate preference for that animal?

E.g., I catch 20 wolves, tame them, and put them all up for adoption. Will only dwarves who like wolves for their cunning adopt the pets, or will other lonely dwarves just for the sheer thrill of it?

unlikely. most likely a single dwarf will end up with tons of pets  :D
if you want them to protect their masters train them into war wolves (may not be possible) and assign them through the [ v ] > [ p ] menu

As I said, chances are that the lump of stone is flagged for use in another job. Check to see if there are any active or suspended constructions nearby.

Failing that, there appears to be some clothing on the site (I'm not familiar with that tileset). If that is the case, then there might be an issue with item ownership (I'm not to certain on the implications of ownership, though).

If you're certain that you haven't got any desperately important construction going on, forbid the lump of stone and then unforbid it. Forbidding it will stop it from being tasked, and unforbidding it will allow it to be moved by the dwarf building the workshop. Or just build the workshop on the empty floor half a dozen tiles away.

Dwarves will move an owned item of clothing out of the way if they want to build something there. This is the only time a dwarf will touch another living dwarf's items. Not sure if it applies here though, as I don't use graphic-like tilesets.

Edit: oh yeah, I had a question. How do I make a tileset so that white = 100% foreground colour and grey = partially transparent? I can use Irfanview to make just the background transparent, but the grey pixels in the tileset look messy on any non-black background.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

First, the wiki is working perfectly fine. Second, I don't see a question.

What are the "Squad EQ" and "Individual EQ" options for under the barracks men?

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Retracted bridge acts as a wall, you can't shoot through a wall (retracted bridge)

Archers will opt to hit things with their crossbow rather than shoot 7/10 times, only way to guarantee that they don't is to make it overly difficult/impossible for them to use melee and force them to use range. Archer towers or pill boxes are my favorite way, they shoot bolts and stay out of melee's harm.

your thinking of raisable bridges....im talking about retracting bridges...the kind the dissapears into thin air and gently lowers people to ground drops enemies into a fiery pit of death
