Erhm. one must first remove sandals or whatever is worn in that general area. *facepalm* Anyway.. onwards to discover the riddle of steel and how to cross a sea.

Good luck with that. Whereas rivers can have bridges, shallow streams, or simply be swam through quickly, seas are...huge. If you truly can't find a land bridge or any other connection to where you're going, only hope is to find the shortest possible patch of sea. Alternatively, if you're in a cold area you can wait until dark and see if the water freezes. That's pretty much the only way you're going to get your companions across with you, unless they can fly. :V

Hehe, yeah. Figured as much already. That companion of mine, I sent her back to her home along with the equipment I gave her, quite useful knowing where to find that swordsman now who can tell me directions to places on the map and that iron gear I scavenged and gave her should increase her survival as my character is more than fine so far with her bronze and copper stuff, no leggings or anything on the torso though just clothes and the only jewelry is carved out of bones and apparently I can wear two crowns on my bronze helmet.

Just need to switch the copper boots with bronze boots and find a cape/cloak that is in red and my bronze scimitar will have to pass for a spartan sword from '300'. Also the starting point of my character ended up something I liked since it has a small fort with ramparts so I finally claimed it and turns out I don't have to swim over the sea just yet as the kobolds and whatnot are on the island threatening the well-being of my acquired human folk. Awesome.

Umm... I somehow managed to make a Roc Terrified! and run away from me.

I can't tell if this is just DF being DF, or if this is an actual thing that should be possible. I don't care that I'm a giant Elephant Man, Megabeasts shouldn't be scared of anything  :-\

For Rocs, its not just size that matters! I got one to cower against a firefly man adventurer. Didn't have the heart to attack it at first, reasoning it was not a foe to civilization. But I later discovered it did indeed have a few dwarven and human kills to its name, and felt no choice in the matter. Still, taking it out felt like shooting Old Yeller. Didn't help that it never fought back, and that it took far too long to put it down for good.

Well, I thought I had finished my goal, but it seems I missed a Roc on the other side of the world, and I'm long since done with this world. You win this round giant burd... *shakes fist*

Onust Tattoostricken "The Watchful Guilt of Innocence" can now rest, his adventure over, as his world is cast away into Armok's dimensional wastebin. All things considered, i accomplished a lot, considering I didn't have armor or Vampire strength. Killed all Dragons, Colossi, Titans, Necromancers and (almost) all Rocs. Got a couple Legendary skills, and racked up 705 notable kills and 955 other kills, so I managed to out-murder the Demon that had the most kills in this world. Now to move onto the latest version.

I wonder, did you perhaps sneak up on said Roc? I think i remember hearing somewhere that certain actions give a bonus to Intimidating foes (like bragging about kills and such), so I wonder if blindsiding the Rocs is what convinced them to run from the puny humanoids.

Quite the achievement IMO! Regarding intimidation, while trying to talk a kobold (who was still hiding beneath the starting area's temple's catacombs) out of hostilities who didn't even respond but the moment I bragged about my character's kill about killing another kobold, it instantly bolted out to the surface where a priest killed it. Good grief are they fast, I set my character's speed to sprint but.. wow.

You can drag companions by swimming ahead of them and then composing something so they catch up. Gotta make sure they can swim or don't gotta breathe though.

I forgot vanilla rocs don't have [NOFEAR], they're one of the ones that I like to get early for the big speed boost, but they also kill more of my early adventurers than any of the others except steel colossi.

Went to a necro tower, was pleased by the newfound relative ease of slaughtering the corpses. Read a necro-codex and am now immortal.

What do you guys think, should I stop the menace of the necromancers or leave them be? They were all weirdly cool and did nothing to impede my progress in reading their books.

Bim and Cerol travel southwest from the freak mate of twilight's lair to a region of snowy forest.  The Sculpture of Lace, located next to a glacier, is home to Ala Championlisted the Large Taker the ettin:

They sneak inside, Bim ready for melee and Cerol hopefully ready to fire. Sneaking is a second nature afterthought here. I think it's only really useful versus vision cones rather than any creature with [MULTIPART_FULL_VISION] which is 360 degrees. Bim gets as close as possible before setting one row of campfires. Switching back to longbow, they both fire a volley, causing the ettin to move into the nook at the top, preventing a good shot. Because of this Bim switches back to melee, vaults over the firewall to bring the ettin back into range.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The initial feel is this is a medium grade ettin, so Bim will use positional, single-action, stand and trade tick combat. He'd like to pin the ettin between himself and the firewall if possible, but Cerol's reload time will make that unlikely.

Now here's where there was an error in setting up the firewall. Bim only set one row. A campfire barricade/firewall really needs to be two rows deep. Once the ettin moved adjacent to the firewall, one of Cerol's shots or one of Bim's sword stabs caused it to jump onto a campfire. With this, Bim jumps back to stand between Cerol and the ettin:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bim also switches his dodge preference to Stand Ground and works in the all important leg/foot shot (to drop speed and remove charge attack):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the wrong side of the firewall, the ettin, now with a target, has no reason to immediately flee when shots are fired. This, in an odd way, is a happy accident as now there's a deviation from normal stat growth. It's not uncommon to take a peasant from novice combat skills to proficient weapon user and still only have either shield or dodge grown to adequate, with possibly the other still at novice. This is presuming every fight is solo and you're trying to finish each fight as quickly as possible.

Beginning stats prior to ettin are generally consistent with this idea (with the exception of wrestler which spiked in the first fight once it was clear that ettin was weak enough to work in some grappling):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Stats after this ettin:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There's really no way dodge and shield would have both moved to adequate under more normal circumstances. Sword may have been the same or higher.

Overall this ettin fight was a great success in that Cerol evolved from a recruit to a bowelf and also improved from dabbling to novice observer:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sadly though Cerol didn't get the kill:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But it all ends well:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Before heading back to the elven town of Twinklelather for a round of drinks, Bim and Cerol may head out to try their luck with Iquila, the baying troll.

So it took only one ettin to kill to advance in those skills that much? That certainly is more realistic and a lot more fun than for example grinding 1000+ ettins in some generic MMORPG game for dozens of hours.

Aye, having your opponent bleeding to death before you make that final satisfying blow is a bummer (have had that happen too).

It could be worse. At least you still get the credit for it...

I went hunting for a dragon with a crossbowman helping me; as we start the fight, my friend is immediately knocked unconcious. I keep fighting; my character is not very skilled with his sword, so I can only deal minor wounds but I'm so good at dodging and blocking, so the dragon never hits me. After a while, I find myself standing away from the dragon, so I run behind a corner to dodge his fire, then I throw a knife at him. Lucky shot, the dragon passes out.
As I try to get close to deal the final blow, my "friend" wakes up and shoots the dragon in the head. One turn later, the dragon bleeds to death.

This whole elven civ and surroundings would be about 2 game weeks worth of exploration, but after over a month of savage lands I'm happy to be with any civilization. Especially one with populated taverns! And people who perform in them! I'm learning new forms and collecting new instruments, some I can actually use! Still no dancers. Maybe they're off in some other civ's taverns, but most likely they're hanging out somewhere they will never dance.

Fighting packs of brutes in their own homes is getting pretty hairy. I should be patient and wait for night instead of going into the ones with upward of a dozen in them, I just hate waiting in the rain. The rain which never stops soaking through my masterwork leather. Next time I see a hole-with-hatch style dwelling I'm going to build a cabin over it. And the brutes will come out and say, "Pecan hardwood floors, how nice! Maybe I won't go out hunting tonight. I'll just have a nice quiet evening in and snuggle up to the spouse by the fire." Problem solved!

That can only happen if the part can grasp. Now that I've put the idea of grasping genitalia out there, "It is inevitable."
