When I play I hang around in Europe.
Usually get some sectoids before floaters show up and take over all the UFOs. And Im fairly certain that my first enounter in a game against snakemen was a base attack in Australia.
So maybe its possible that thats true.

That is...impressive.  I don't know if I could get away with doing that much manual work for an x-com game.  The spreadsheets are awesome, and I can definitely see their functionality.  I also used notepad back when I was in a couple of DF bloodline games to make notes as I played; its a great way to do it, though I mourn the lack of a spell-check feature.

actually the lack of a spell check feature in notepad is one of the main reasons i use it for this (along with it taking up very little screen space).

when taking notes it is very inefficient to edit your work. despite knowing this I still do it instinctively. not having a spell check to get in the way is an excellent way to increase your input speed. it is also quicker to check all your spelling once you are done and Firefox is quite adequate for that.

My college teacher stressed this. "thou shall not fiddle". She claimed that not fiddling increases your WPM by 10.

I was looking for ways to be able to do everything faster. Guess I won't find them here.  :P

No offense Anya, if it works for you, great, but I don't have the patience to do all of that other than maybe keeping notepad open to take notes. I've played X-Com enough that I've gotten used to the quirks and inefficiencies of the UI and can generally work around them. I've also mostly given up on trying to micromanage the troops. I let XCOMUTIL add it's little stat summary letters to the end of the names and just use those to judge whether someone should have this or that. Only thing I really have to pay any attention to is strength, but I'm usually safe if I stick with giving heavy weapons to the higher ranked people(They're usually a bit stronger and have been around long enough I sorta know their stats.) and i try not to overload the ones marked weak.

Anywho, good job and interesting read.

I totally agree with you but in this situation others have voiced what they want their soldiers armed with so I cant arm based on stats alone.

but yes I realize some of the stuff I do is over kill. It keeps me focused though and thats arguably the most important thing to do.

anyways, off to bed for tonight. hope to get at least halfway through the next post tomorrow.

Good system. Obviously more complicated then what I'd use to just play the game, but I can see it working well for an LP.

little story post. Setting the mood for the terror mission :3

As the Skyranger returned to base I received a call from an X-Com operative in Singapore. Aliens were attacking Singapore! "The Skyranger is still air-born, it needs to return before it can head to Singapore." The pilot advised me.
"You can quickly refit the remaining Interceptor to carry a small group of soldiers commander." Mac chipped in as he escorted the Skyranger back to base. I looked at my command console and brought up the aircraft status screen.



"Commander, that won't work I'm afraid. We don't have the fuel to make that trip." Commented the Head of Aircraft Maintenance. "You'll need another solution."
"We need time. Any ideas agent?" I asked the Singaporean operative.
"Yes commander... just one. I will contact some people and try to buy you some time. Give me an hour." He replied and disconnected.

Time passed and the room remained quiet. The Skyranger crawled closer and closer to base but every second ticked by like it was made of molasses. While waiting I received a report from the clean up crew in Uzbekistan.



I suddenly received a call from the Singaporean X-Com operative. "Commander. I have attracted the alien strike force to a low population warehouse district. I'll try to keep them here as long as possible but I think they are getting wise to me." He reported. Loud horns and sirens can be heard in the background. "Please hurry, it took a whole team of police to take out one of the little demons."

"Help is on the way operative. Hang in there, the Skyranger is prepped and about to launch." I replied as I brought up the way-point system for the pilot.



I had ordered Cerapa and Ashley Smith to gather two teams. Cerapa selected Argatson, Gogandantess, Sarah Newman and Archangel to form a heavy weapons squad while Ashley Smith chose Roll Fizzlebeef, Mr. Apple, Tiberius Seius Cato and Steve to from an all purpose strike team.

The Skyranger took off and flew through the air at maximum speed. It would be hours before they would arrive however.

"Commander, they got the better of us..." A whisper could be heard over the radio. "I hear them outside... a-and in my head. Oh god no they're in my head!" The Singaporean operative screamed. "We got split up, my team is all dead." The man spoke without purpose, he was hiding in a small warehouse.
"Hang in there Han Qin. The Skyranger will be on site in ten minutes." I tried to reassure him and calm him down.
"Th-There at the door commander... T-Tell my wife and daughter that I love them..." He replied quietly.
"Don't do it Han Qin, hang tight we're almost there!" I replied as I gripped my chair.

A loud crash can be heard between quickened breaths through the radio. "Looking for me you creepy alien fucks!? HERE I AM!" Gunfire can be heard as he empties an entire clip of pistol rounds into some alien foe. He is interrupted by by the sound of an alien weapon discharging a round, followed by a bone chilling scream through the microphone. Static blips through the radio as Han Qin falls to the ground, a gaping wound in his shoulder smoldering with green fire. "Tell... them... I love.. them."

I hold my head in frustration. Another courageous human casualty in this war. "Soldiers, I want every last one of those aliens to regret the day they began to exist." I commanded grimly. "Lets show those aliens why we're the dominant creature on this world!"

We don't actually know about the shoulder wound and the green fire, this scene of the movie was shot from the dead guy's perspective. But it probably isn't too difficult to guess what happened, I figure that plasma weapons would make a fairly distinctive sound...
