Run to kitchen, greet mother. Ask if we can go out and play.
Use a pirate voice while doing this, and keep an eye out for shady types, or giant firey rain.

I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this fort any more. Migrants arrive, they die for some reason, the fort is flooded for another reason, then dwarves go mad, more dwarves die and I'm just laughing in my distress.

You do so, and you mother replies,

"Sure, honey. Just take your socks off first."

You are anxious to go out and play.

Follow our mother's directions. Go out and look for dad, who is probably in the fields.

You take off your socks, leaving them on a nearby table, and run off. Your brother is just outside (he is 11), and motions for you to follow him.

Well obviously with our penchant for acting we should hop the nearest wagon and head for the city and become a rodeo clown.

"Having faith" that the bridge will not fall, implies that the bridge itself isn't that trustworthy. It's not that different from "I pray that the bridge will hold my weight."

Oh the recursiveness!

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

> Follow brother.

You follow him into the forest, jumping logs and running to catch up. When you a reach a great rift in the ground, your brother doesn't even hesitate and clears the rift by pole-jumping there using a nearby fallen branch. You however, grind to a halt before the rift. Looking down, there is nothing but blackness at the bottom, and the rift is metres wide. Your brother sits on the precipice, egging you on.
