I don't think Steve would go for that - he's a big fan of hard sci-fi (as evidenced by his work on a Newtonian version of Aurora), and space zombies is... well, a fairly obscure set of the genre.

I would like to see a race that actually bothers with boarding. It'd give a reason to station marine companies on larger warships!
The AI is basically nothing but flaws right now, they lack all sorts of abilities, allocate research poorly (as said earlier) and are all around rather bad.

Newbie question: why is it that the folder I have Aurora installed in shows its size as 142 MB, but the Programs and Features menu thinks the program takes up eight gigabytes?

That's only on my recent reinstall, too. The first time it thought it was 179 GB. :o

Someone on the aurora forums had something like this, lemme look for it.

EDIT: Hell, I can't find it. Anyone know what topic I'm talking about?

It would be nice if civvies auto-built conventional industry for no minerals, or at least very weak pseudo construction facilities. Maybe limit it by colony cost.  Now THAT would be a reason to expand and get your pop out there.  (Make it  so they never steal workers.)

Automated Civilian Facilities?  Minimal employees makes everything easier...  I would support that.

Well, more that idle population would slowly build up facilities that work like 2% effective construction facilities and mines.  They're free but not very effective, their main purpose is to use up idle pop.  Not automatED.  :3  But drop some minerals and slowly they can build a real construction plant.

My impression is that while civilians do build their own industry, it is for mundane purposes and not capable of using TNEs. After all, it's not like you have to make periodic shipments of clothing or microwave ovens; clearly the populations produce their own goods, just not anything you make use of.

Which would basically be conventional industry.

I've always thought that idle workers should contribute a (small amount) of construction points. Maybe mining and refining as well.

Yeah, but if the Earth gets wiped out, even a splinter colony starting with nothing should be able to get into the air as long as they have minerals in the crust and a LOT of time.  They can't now.

Only Earth gets to do that now...and only ever once.

Maybe let us buy/rent idle civilian construction capacity, just like asteroids.

Eh, gotta disagree re:base civilian construction.

Just build some engineering brigades and you shouldn't have much of a problem with PDC/etc construction on far flung colonies. Hell, I'm even building sector commands entirely with engineers (The planet has a colony cost of ~24 and a pressure of 25, ie it'd take decades to bring the cost down). Currently sitting at an annual construction rate of 729 purely from engineers.

As far as Burnedtoast's complaint re:exploration: It's even worse in DF when you take into account that you can completely wall yourself off from the outside world.

Being able to contract jobs out to civilians might be fun. They could have a construction capacity based on the available workers on a world (representing workers in the civilian sector, since they don't have government jobs) and you could contract jobs out to them at an increased cost. You provide the minerals plus 5x the normal wealth cost and they build it for you.

That way you would have an option to build on a world when you have no construction factories or augment your normal construction capacity temporarily, but would still need the minerals and would pay a lot more for it.

I like Paul's idea. Would make it much easier to recover should Earth get wiped out somehow.

Yeah, but they're insanely slow. I think they're slower than a factory, plus they need huge troop transports to get anywhere. I rarely use them.
