People defending homeopathy and then slamming actual medicine.
Why do people do this to themselves and to people who will listen?

Largely because they don't know (or refuse to believe) that "alternative" (by definition worthless, if it worked it would just be called "medicine") medicine is a multi-billion dollar industry with virtually zero regulation on contents or advertising. Thus, they believe that Big Pharma is keeping the "natural effective medicine" down so they can charge big bucks for pills and make money off the deliberately engineered side effects. Never mind that plenty of medicines are nothing but the active chemicals from plants distilled down, or that using many "natural" cures will kill you if you take them for a long time due to varying chemical concentrations in the plant. (Datura, to use the most famous example, can have a leaf from one plant be too weak to medically useful, while another plant would be instantly fatal if prepared the same way. The difference being almost impossible to determine).

Why would you say that?

I set up an appt with the pills doctor.

I can't help but feel a lingering sense of consternation. When nearly all my problems in life are existential in nature, having something that alters my perception sounds fatal to any sense of identity I have...

If you feel they're changing you, you don't have to keep taking them-just give them a try, and see if it improves things.

Keep in mind that there are already plenty of things that you do that alter your perceptions.  Taking a nap; eating food a) vs food b); turning on a light; stretching tense muscles; moving a foot to the left - what I'm saying is, perceptions are constantly changing.

There is nothing wrong with turning on a lamp, if your goal is to read without eyestrain.  There, likewise, is nothing wrong with using appropriate means to stabilize your mood, if your goal is to allow yourself to enjoy life.

It gets better - I promise you, for what it's worth.

That's a dubious rationalization, all pro-pills reasons sounds dubious. It just doesn't ring right in my head. The only thing lending them credence is I'm not completely trusting of my own rationales.

I'm with you on the aversion to taking meds thing. But sometimes you get in a low rut and you need that little assist to get out of it. Doesn't mean you need them forever. I was on Zoloft for a few weeks after a near-suicide (in which I didn't even feel "depressed", just....here. Allie Brosh summed this up far better than I ever could.

Anyways, that got me back to where I sleeping less than 20 hours a day and actually doing stuff. Then I stopped taking it because I didn't like some of the side effects, but by that point I was enough out of the rut to keep going on my own.
