How do you have HDD damage?  Normal wear and tear?

I ask because I have a very old computer and I'm always wondering what the warning signs of parts failing might be,
He mentioned earlier about powering the computer down by holding the power button rather than through the proper means.

Accidentally
This was a low-level scan, too. It reported 14 bad blocks, altough there's a few more that don't seem to be in a great state either.

Everything's normal, no need for concern.

3 options,

-Battery or power supply failure resulting in a spectacular short.
-Dust explosion in the fans
-Using liquid hydrogen instead of liquid Helium for overclocking was a mistake

On a side note, you might also have encountered some obscure UNIX error.

I think it might be time for a back-up. Or an exodus, which ever you prefer. DOubt it's going to last long.

Seconded. It sounds like it could stop working completely at any moment. While you could still probably take everything off it without any problem even if stopped working, there isn't any need to risk having a problem requiring you to buy recovery software.

I am trying to install Fedora on a dual boot on my computer for a change of pace from my usual Linux flavor, but it's slower and my touchpad scrolling doesn't work. Blagh. I never realized how much I require touchpad scrolling until now.

I make a preposterous amount of money for someone with my responsibilities and all I can think is that it's a ridiculous waste of time because I spend the day working in order to go home and do nothing I really care about, and instead spend a bunch of time taking care of objects I don't really want at all but am sort of sentimentally attached to.

Yes, money's great, and it lets you have choices (for example, I will be making the choice to find out why I keep getting pneumonia, and for Christmas I am going to buy myself a good pair of boots).  However, I seem to be giving up the big things I want in life in favor of a bunch of little perks, and I feel like I'm slowly dying internally.  Hell. . . most of the things I thought I wanted, stuff that was going to make me feel somehow good about the awful bargain I'm making, were instead things I found I wanted to watch other people doing.  I don't actually want hairclips or nice nightshirts or rose perfume.  I want to imagine a cute girl enjoying those things.  I don't even really want a nicely embroidered waistcoat.  Also, I'm lonely, which is stupid.

Time to go take out the trash, do the dishes, and vacuum the carpets.

I think this is the second time I've asked somebody on the boards this question today, or possibly just in the last couple of days, but are you secretly me?

EDIT: Although the boots and pneumonia are off, I do have a nice thing to buy myself come Christmas and I do have a recurring medical problem that I'm trying to get taken care of. Mostly I'm asking about the rest of the quote, though.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
