Oh, I know why.  It's holdover from last time the local transit system had a strike.

I played Way of the Samurai on an emulator, hearing that it had an interesting story.  Basically it sets up a scenario and you go in and do what you want, and your actions influence (or not, apparently) the storyline in various ways.  It's also apparently very short, like an hour long, but you can go back and do it again and collect more swords and shit, like some kind of choose your own adventure game but with more action, and apparently permadeath.

uuuugh.  It was so bad.

The tutorial was like 15 minutes long and 12 of those were listening to some lady tell me obvious things.  The gameplay was okay but not great, Bushido Blade style combat would've made things much more interesting.

I didn't really get into the storyline, but it didn't matter because everything I saw was fucked up.  Black samurai with a giant afro and breakdancing swordplay was the first red flag.  Then (spoiler alert?) some dudes broke into the restaurant I was visiting and threatened people, I pulled a sword and killed two of them, but the third kicked my ass and I surrendered, joining his evil bad guy clan to survive.  Black Samurai was disappointed with me, and the girl who owned the shop was afraid of me.  I pulled my sword to kill her and she ran away in a cutscene that prevented me from killing her.  So much for meaningful choices.  Then I tried to kill her adopted dad but he was straight up invincible, so I gave up and went on to the evil bad guy clan's hideout.  Along the way I met Black Samurai and tried to kill him, he was beating me pretty bad with his Offensive Offense, but I finally got him down and he ran away in another scripted cutscene.  At that pointed I told the game to go fuck itself and quit.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

That or Big Rigs: Over The Road Plateau of Leng Racing.
FTFY.

And honestly.

I would play a Lovecraft themed game about racing semis through twisted planes of antediluvian horror.

I would play that until my eyes bled solar fire and my orifices oozed fluids from beyond the stars.

I also played God Hand.  Gameplay-wise it's much better, obviously.

HOWEVER

Quote from: Wikipedia
The game mixes western and Japanese-themed comedy, containing over-the-top characters and storyline events.

Maybe this is just my gaijin brain failing to grasp Japanese humor, but holy fuck this game is excruciatingly unfunny.  If laughter really was the greatest cure this game would have killed everyone on Earth.

The humor reminds me of Devil May Cry, but where that game was unfunny in a kind of silly "heh heh that red coat guy sure is crazy" way, this is something different.  It makes me nervous, something primal in my brain recognizes this game as some kind of aggressor.

Even Japan didn't find it funny to my knowledge. The problem with the game is that it is supposed to be intentionally terrible but unfortunately manages to be terrible.

I still own it and it is pretty fun... the problem is that It has been sooo long since I played it that I am no good... and the game really does require practice (Ever fought 10 power rangers at once? I have!)

I feel the humor in the game is more to set the tone of the game. I can't think of another game offhand where the game just tries to be lighthearted and non-serious with it's intentional bad humor, while still being intensely hard. It really is a subjective thing, I loved the dialogue, I've played through the game so many times I remember the whole script by heart almost.

And it's five power rangers, they even announce how many there are when you fight them "We're the Mad Midget Five!"

My biggest problem right now is that emulators aren't the most precise things and there's still some oddities like the music speeding up and slowing down, and sometimes Gene gets confused (maybe all the blows to the head are getting to him) and decides every button on the controller is "do a backflip"

EDIT:  Like just now, I did ballbuster and then went god hand on HONGRY HOMBRE to pummel him, but suddenly Gene decided to cartwheel away while his time was ticking down.

One of the challenges is to fight 10 of them.

? I've played Godhand inside and out, like serious I was super hardcore into it for the longest time, and I simply cannot remember any Faery Challenge or Fighting Arena Challenge where you have to fight a 10 mad midgets simultaneously. I can't really think of any other characters that would qualify as 'power rangers' so I'm not sure where in the game you are.
