Mm... to the eye conversation, from what I can recall sight deterioration due to lowlight conditions takes, like. Reading/writing intensively in candle level illumination over the course of years/decades. Even just a computer screen is pretty well over the threshold for that, and eye strain is more of an issue than illumination, iirc. So just popping up the zoom a couple degrees nips that in the bud.

Yea, fluorescent lights are bad for your eyes.
Incandescent lights are actually best, but they always burn out and use too much energy.
... which one are those spiraly ones, again? I like those, personally. They last for goddamn ever. Used a single bulb constantly through both middle and highschool, I think. Somewhere in that range, it was over five, six years of almost-always-on. Ultimately the bulb died because it got dropped and shattered, not because it burnt out.

And yeah, fluorescents can go blow themselves. One of the reasons they fuck you up is that they're constantly... shifting or something, just below what the threshold to register as light change but enough to bugger with your eyes. You can actually see it pretty clearly when they're damaged or somethin'.  Iirc, the damned things have be experimentally proven to cause headaches and reduce mental functioning (which is kinda' hilarious/enraging considering how prevalent they are in schools :-\) because of what they're doing to your eyes. Hate them with a frothing unholy passion.

Any kind of bright light is uncomfortable for me, though, fluorescent or not.  Just going outside during the day if the sky isn't heavily clouded is uncomfortable.  It's not from spending too much time in the dark, because it was the same even as a kid when I played outside every day.  Which is why I think most people habitually fuck up their eyes.  I think they prefer a level of light that causes eye strain.

there's actually was to see the flashing, like looking at the light from the corner of your eye, or shaking your hand between your face and the light while you look at it. It kinda flashes between blue and yellow.

Try halogen bulbs instead. Much brighter and more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs, but not having the flickering and blowing up problems that fluorescent bulbs tend to have (which are not designed to be turned on and off in relatively short periods of time).

LED lights are also a good choice, having a high quality of light output, as well as being efficient and long lasting, but tend to cost more up front.

But seriously, f**k fluorescent lights.

Most of the problem with flourescent lights running from an AC supply is that they can very faintly flicker, which IIRC is the cause of the headaches and suchlike.

Just use LEDs for all lighting. They have no disadvantage compared to the others. None.

Cost? Those things can be pretty expensive at first, even if you end up saving money in the long run.

Not even remotely. Cost isn't just what's on the sticker, cost is the electricity you pay for, and cost is the rate you replace them. That's not "long run", that's like two weeks.

This idea that the sticker price somehow makes LEDs more expensive is bullshit.

... huh. So they are. Which is... kinda' odd. The small ones seem far less annoying than those huge ceiling ones for some reason or another. I mean... it barely matters anymore 'cause I basically just leave lights off 90-95% of the time, but... hrm.

Have to look into LED lights, then. Got any suggestions for room lighting via LED, MSH?

If you buy leds buy them from the expensive providers. There are cheaper alternatives (eg chinese) but that's the reason why my LED lights in the livingroom are slowly but surely burning out.

Then again, my father bought several led bulbs from legit providers and a couple of them are burning out as well. I dont know to what extent I believe all the claims about LED lights. I like the white light they provide, but am somewhat skeptical about their durability.

Also, be sure to go for "superbright" ones if you want light enough to see by.

Afraid not. Living at college does not afford me the need to buy lights often.

They don't have to come in white, by the way. LEDs can be made to emit all colors of light.
