Debating depression.

I'm against the idea that I have it, but I'm making some good arguments for it; I have free counseling available, still being in high school, but I'd rather not bother when there were 2 suicides recently, one of which hit some close friends pretty hard. If I ever have a suicidal thought (18 years and still not one), I'll seek help. For now, I'll see if a good night's sleep will reinvigorate me.

I think finally finishing fortbent five, followed by Frankenstein, forced these feelings; I have nothing to work on anymore, nothing to read, nothing to accomplish, nothing to conquer, nothing. Frankenstein was a temporary occupation, anyway; most difficult book I've ever read, yes, but damn easy to read regardless. Right now, I have no unfinished projects, nothing with something obvious to do. But do I not care because of that, or do I feel that due to my apathy?

Count this as agreement with the "Don't worry about it, Putnam" folks. Recharge yourself by taking in some new experiences and/or content. Or review something that inspired you in the past. Spend some time getting in touch with why you Make Things in the first place.

I'm actually doing that right now, by watching This:

Yeah.  I'm saying this as someone who has been quite seriously depressed in my day--it sounds like you're in the safe zone.  If we're wrong and you need help, then we'll be here, but if you're just feeling worn out and disinterested for now, I don't think it's worth worrying about.

I think there's a feeling that life is supposed to just sort of be generically happy, but other people come from other traditions and don't feel the same way about that--one of my family's mottos is "Who promised you a rose garden?"  What I'm trying to say is that I hope you feel better soon, but you should probably just try to see the good in your current situation, relax, rejuvenate, and all that awesome spatacular stuff.

Not to get my happiness in your sadness, but this has now become my most epic motto I have heard yet.

Why, thank you.  That one is thanks to my crotchety old mathematically-inclined alcoholic grandfather.

Not only are we clannish, we also hold onto family history like it was manna from heaven.

It's a lot easier to swallow "Well, I'm nearing sixty and clean houses for a living, and two of my daughters work at a video store with another a prostitute and my son dead" when you can also say "yeah, and WE helped found the Quakers, so there!"

I've got 50% of my family history down, back to when we were Landschnects and Saami Occultist. The other 50% ends with my Dad, though. :/

If he weren't so strongly opposed to us trying to track down his parents, I'd have done it by now. I've gotten the hospital he was born at from him, and might be able to do a physical record search if I can get there... if they still have his birth records, that is.

Hmmmm.... is there a Family History/Lore thread? That could be a neat thread.

We don't talk about my family history much... Grandfather was Jewish in Austria during WWII and was the only one who managed to get out of there.
It has always been a bit of a family taboo to mention.

I personally have a rather interesting family history, due to the fact that my paternal grandma was adopted (and had enough interest in genealogies to track both her biological and adopted families). There are all sorts of interesting stories (apparently her biological mother was a younger girl who ended up having a liaison with an out-of-town gambler type who would visit occasionally, this also lead to the possible discovery of another branch of the family through a "legitimate" child of the gambler). Also some other cool things like my original immigrant ancestors being fugitives from the king (they were on the wrong side of a rebellion) who changed their names on the trip over (which really threw my grandma for a loop for quite a while). Plus being related to George Washington's grandfather is pretty cool (family branched off through his uncle).

Rebel scum are the best ancestors.

Out of town gamblers are a close second, though.

Bluh forgetting REALLY important things when you need to know them right then is sad and annoying.
That and aha, my old computer happens to not work at all now or anything, welp.
There goes a lot of things down the drain.
