My roommate is having a screaming argument with her friend over the phone, in the other room.

It's kind of freaking me out, because it reminds me of a lot of other situations like that, like my arguments with my boyfriend, or when my Korean roommate used to shout at me because her boyfriend was being abusive, or my mother shouting at her mother because she wanted validation.

The truth is, I really don't like arguing.  I like debating, and I like thinking, but I don't like it when people get honestly angry with each other, especially when they're off in the other room and I'm not involved in it, but I do have to be involved in it by virtue of hearing it.

I hear that. Was so glad to move out of my family's for that reason, although since my other siblings are also gone now it should be okay when I have to move back for the summer. It's really just sort of psychologically... jarring? Is that the word I'm looking for? I just feel startled and threatened when people are yelling, even if I'm not involved directly. Not sure if it's quite the same to you, but I sympathize with the annoyingness. Hope it's over soon.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Nah, it's okay... it's over now, and hopefully she'll be able to mend the tensions with this friend.  I've heard their arguments escalating recently, and he seems like quite a bastard.  Still a bit jarring, but I think the rest of the evening should be generally okay.

I find that my sheer stubbornness has gotten me into more trouble than I can usually handle.

And it worsens my familial ties ;_;

Oogh.  I haven't been up this late for two weeks.  I'm on my second cup of tea and I've eaten five pieces of toast, because apparently doing math for long hours makes people really, really hungry and tired.  Anyway, only two (related) problems left, so I should be okay.  Might be able to get as much as 5 hours of sleep, which is pretty good the night before a problem set is due.

It's four AM.  Do you know where your Vector is?

Why, yes!  She's still doing math homework.

Oh my god.

By that time I'd be unable to even think straight.
The only thing that works great to me during the night, is writing essays or something similar and even that only between 10pm and 2 am.
