In any case: damn physicists.

Here's hoping he discovered the Higgs Boson, then. Glad you've got a decent recourse for dealing with it, at any rate!

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Twilight Zone esque update to my neighbor's dog being killed: Apparently their dog is fine.  That was some other little brown dog that got crushed in the street.

Well, that didn't last long.  This time it's definitely the neighbor's dog, because I recognize the collar.  It's laying against the fence, covered in flies.  Goddammit.

Had PTSD flashbacks to my mastiff.  He had a hot spot at the base of his tail and would often try to scratch it by rolling onto his back and thrusting the entire lower half of his body in the air.  It looked funny until you realized this was a 100+ pound animal with sharp claws.  You could lose an eye.  Scary stuff.

Seems my plans for the evening were canceled as well. That's not what made me sad. My friend received some bad news about her cats that dissolved into a huge argument with her parents. Now things are kind of up in the air for her so obviously a night of poetry and wine was out of the question. I just spent the last couple hours trying to make her feel better. I think I was at least moderately successful.

My roommate is having a screaming argument with her friend over the phone, in the other room.

It's kind of freaking me out, because it reminds me of a lot of other situations like that, like my arguments with my boyfriend, or when my Korean roommate used to shout at me because her boyfriend was being abusive, or my mother shouting at her mother because she wanted validation.

The truth is, I really don't like arguing.  I like debating, and I like thinking, but I don't like it when people get honestly angry with each other, especially when they're off in the other room and I'm not involved in it, but I do have to be involved in it by virtue of hearing it.

Tune out from the asshats, put some headphones on and turn up the volume, or tell them to STFU but that might have some problems with it.
