We spent all of yesterday preparing for the inevitable power outage. My father dug out an old rotary phone that doesn't need power

Since when do regular landline phones need external power anyway? There's a reason the thing only has one cord.

Because cordless phone gots to stay charged.

Because it's the cordless phone base that does the connecting of the phone to the outside world, and it doesn't matter how much juice is on the actual phone.

Toasters, man.

The timer didn't go off, so now I have two charred lumps and a house full of smoke.

If it's a desktop, open it up and check it, something might be fried.

If it's a laptop, cry.

Been having similar troubles with my desktop rig at home. Try killing all power (disconnect power cable from the actual tower), then restore the cable and try again. If it still won't power on, either the power supply is shot or your motherboard is grounding out somewhere (see if it's touching the case...shouldn't haven't happened unless the case got jostled hard or you were tinkering around in there, but you never know....)

In any case, rescue the files on the hard drive before you attempt to turn it on after "fixing" the problem. If you don't fix everything FOR SURE, then it might fry the hard drive if it didn't the first time for whatever reason. It might be not be a risk, but you can't be too safe. I've heard several stories of this, and it's happened to me (only once, thankfully).

Also, Mass Effect cutscenes are annoying to watch after the tenth time.

Man, my computer gives off all kinds of odd smells.  At first I was afraid something was burning but no damage could be seen and no effects could be noticed while it was online either.  I guess it just has plasticky BO.

Computer is having issues with the power box (don't know its real name) and will probably have to be sent back to the manufacturer. :-\

The power supply? That's a quick and easy fix. Look and see what the current one is rated at (unless you've got a heavy-duty gaming rig, it should be around 350-450 watts) and go buy one with the same rating or higher. Swap 'em out, hook up all the molex connectors (those cables with the big white plugs) and you're back in business.
