OK, I got my hands on the books, and I've given them a skim-read. I want to build a 500 point IG army to get the hang of the game. As I understand it, I want to stay out of melee with IG as much as possible, so I want plenty of mortars and some snipers to keep the enemy pinned. Anyway, here's what I got:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
a) Is this a valid army?
b) Is this a playable army?
c) Did I overdo it on anti-vehicle stuff?

Actually, you under-did it. Lascannons and auto cannons are what should be in your Heavy Weapons squads.

Mortars suck, and don't bother with the chimera.

And you forgot the troop commander.

In other news, I had an idea for a little tournament here on Bay12, the thread is in Play with Your Buddies if you're interested.

Well
A] No idea
B] Very much so, Though don't try to out shoot Tau or Eldar. You'll get ripped apart.
C] Kinda. There won't be that many vehicles in a 500 pt game, Possible one or two.
Get another infantry squad instead of one of your heavy weapons.
Possibly get some conscripts to provide fodder for assaults.

Hmm, I was thinking about getting a conscript squad for some fodder, but I was under impression they fail morale checks every single time. I was also looking at penal squad, but they're a bit pricey. Are they worth it?

And if mortars suck, what other barrage stuff can I replace them with? Barrage is best for pinning, correct? How useful/reliable is pinning anyway?

What are scout sentinels like? Any use for assaults, in case I face Tau or Eldar?

Couldn't you get a commissar or such?
How many points are they, 10 or 20?

35, and I don't think I can attach them to conscripts.

Unless it says you can't, you can. Penal troops can be deadly in cc, if you roll a five or a six.

And at only 500pts you don't need to worry about pinning unless against 'Nids or Orks. And mortars are actually useful against them due to their terrible armour save.

Well, Commissars probably aren't worth it then.

Tau are around the same as your guys in CC, but with a better save. Their WS might be 2 though, not sure.
Eldar will probably rip you to shreds no matter what, especially If you go up against an experienced player.

Sentinels are fun to use, Not very good in assaults though.

You could get some sort of tank for barrages, Probably not worth it in a 500 pt game, Especially since you'll probably only get one or two shots off.

Basically, You just need to play some games, and find out what models you like.

What you like, may not necessarily be the best, but Its still fun.

For example, I use piranhas which most Tau players don't use at all.

I also use Biovores and lictors which most people think are a waste of points.

Use what you like, and at least you'll have fun.

OK, reworked the army a bit:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm worried I don't have enough mobility, for closing in with Eldar and Tau. Would exchanging one infantry squad for a rough rider squad be good use of points? And do I really need the mobility? I kinda like an all-infantry army, flavour-wise.
