That is how the game plays. You are a single human presence in a hostile, AI controlled section of space.

You're more of a resistance than a capable faction. You're never actually facing the entirety of an AI, just one of it's subcommanders.

Did you do the tutorial? I think it explains all of this. By the way, you NEVER compete directly against other humans. You can be a dick, but never directly attack another (but don't be a dick). In a multiplayer game, you're all fighting against the AI.
