Happens to me randomly on SMP, too. Nothing seems to cause it, and it happens completely at random. It could take 30 minutes, it could take 30 seconds, it could work fine the entire time. Just deal with it, man. I wouldn't be too worried about it unless it's crashing your entire computer.

Setting your render distance to normal seems to help on SMP, might be worth giving it a try.

Not really, no. There is a "game mode" called Fortwars, where people get divided in two (or more) teams, start building a fortress in peace, hiding some arbitrary items (like glowstone dust which is pretty much ideal because you can't accidentally place it and you can't find more of it in the normal world) and after some time (usually a few days), SHIT'S GOING DOWN in an epic war between Team A and Team B.
The team that has the most glowstone dust after the fight period wins.

Of course, there are many variations to this concept, but that's pretty much how it goes.

The extent of my Minecraft Skill involves teching up to stone picks, and building a 5x5 or 7x7 square hut to stave off the undead swarms. After that, it's exploration time.
