I think it's possible to set up a trap that will drop a ton of sand into an enclosed space. Gonna have to hunt down the video I saw to get the detail though.

Using tnt is the only way I can think of.

For a ceiling I suppose you could maybe hide some big electric circuit that went fairly far up to trigger liquid and snuff out a support torch.

although seeings how it's beta mode, i'd wait for a few of the kinks to be worked out

Minecraft has easily eaten up the sort of hours I expect to spend on some big jrpg game (can rarely stand those anymore) for a fraction of the cost so all in all I'm quite happy I bought it, back in alpha. If you like the stuff related to the idea of digging into the ground (Dwarf Fortress perhaps?) the nature of the game should suit you and it is one of the few games that can still make me panic at noises in the dark. And you can make some fairly complex machinery type stuff even with the game only at this stage.

Is Minecraft REALLY worth buying?

Oh yes it is definitely worth buying, maybe a little less so than in alpha because when the game comes out as stable, you don't get the expansion packs/new game modes/stable release in general for free after you've bought the beta copy.
But you get free updates until that point. And if not for that, buy Minecraft because the hours it will take away from you will eat your soul, leaving you a thoughtless, diamond mining pick producing husk of a person.

Recently I have been having black screen crashes on SMP, I searched around on the official forums, but I am asking here also, what is causing this, and is there a method to prevent them, it is aprox one per 10 min
