Whelp... I thought i'd give it a go. First two minutes was great... Then I got hit by the worst lag in any game I have played, in my entire life, before it pulled the bird on me and got stuck on 0 FPS. What. The. Hell. Just. Happened.

But, pretty much everyone is going to want to start new maps for the biomes and whatever else he adds.

Or you can just delete any outside wilderness map chunks, keeping the important parts of your map and the biomes and other fun stuff will regenerate.

Seems pretty pointless.

I only mention this because a lot of people seem to be saying "zOMG I'LL HAVE TO MAKE 938490245 TORCHES SO I CAN GET 938490245 FREE LANTERNS!!", but likely haven't thought very far ahead into the matter..

The point I feel is so it doesn't negate the hard work people have set up in order to never die.

I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

so i've been building a big spiral staircase with a 5x5 core, i'm still trying to figure out what to do with the core, it has 3 wide bridges to it from the outside parts every 2 levels, rotating around it. (so on any one side it has a bridge to it every 8 levels)  There is a 3 wide path around the entire outside.

Any thoughts on what to do with it?  I left it so I could hollow it out or carve it into something, trying to stick to vaugely realistic looking when it comes to supports.

I'm not really able to visualize that from your description.  You're building or digging?

If you dig a one-square-wide hole straight down the center, then at the bottom dig down two more squares and fill them with water, you have an express elevator from the top to the bottom.

Bonus: put in windows, or rebuild the entire column out of glass.

I took a screenshot so it'll make more sense, I'm digging it out:

How exactly do you use that as an elevator?

Haha... "express elevator" is essentially "a really long hole with water at the bottom so you don't take damage when you fall" from the sounds of it.

stuff

Instead of an express elevator, make a water ladder in the center. It serves the same purpose, but if you build the thing with ladders instead of signs, you can prevent yourself from falling to your death. You can also use it to go up instead of down only.

Make a 2x2 shaft going straight up and down. Fill with water. By running a boat into the bottom part, it rapidly shoots up to the top. If done right, you can make the water physics have the flow going into the base w/o worrying about any flooding. Thus any boat put into the bottom is pushed in and floats to the top w/o a problem! :D

This also allows for large chains of very tall boat-elevators which can have a constant downhill slope, and thus push any boat from any point to any other point. I personally use an elevated boat route to get from the ocean up to the top of my fort in the moutains.

Boat + water = up.
