Why aren't all of the mutations permanent? Can't we just pick them from a list?

Just won a game of follow the liter with 16-2 3-2. Highlight include running up to a crouching hunter and pistol whipping him to death, a spitter bombing an empty street, a charger missing at point blank range, nick trying to fill the generator while standing in both a fire and a spitter pile, coach killing rochelle being smoked(by me) by clearing the zombies attacker her with a shotgun and somebody destroying 2 cans with a well placed pipe bomb or something.

The problem is, now I feel guilty for getting an achievement by playing against what appear to be complete shooter newbies and one guy with an 800 ping.

Why aren't all of the mutations permanent? Can't we just pick them from a list?

I really like it this way.  They keep the game fresh.  They keep the community from getting all split up (there's always enough servers running the current mutation, while if they were all available at once, there wouldn't necessarily be enough players to get into a game when you wanted).  They make you go "Oh hey, it's running this mode again, let me fire the game back up".  And the most important reason, in my mind:  Each week, you get a game mode that the entire community hasn't been playing for the last two months straight.

A month ago, it was impossible for a relatively new person to get into Scavenge.  For one thing, it had a somewhat small playerbase, so there often weren't games open to join.  But the really bad part is that people who played it, ONLY played scavenge, they played it very competitively, and they were really, REALLY good.  Scavenge newbies got driven off, and you really couldn't have much fun (you could expect to get voted off for small mistakes).  Follow the Liter?  Suddenly there's a whole herd of people who are okay at it, not great, but okay.  And it's a whole lot more fun to play.  Bleed Out was the same; you were playing with people who were all still learning the game mode, so they didn't get all pissed off if you weren't a god at it.

Variety is the spice of life, really.

This week is the Mutation "Last Man On Earth," where you play as the sole survivor and the Infected all try to become your best friends. Which means a few things, not the least of which is once you're incapacitated, you have to start the round over.

Next week's mutation will be the long awaited "Chainsaw Massacre." I'm probably going to replay several campaigns during that.

Untrue!  If you get incapped by something that grabs you, the special infected run away from you, and you get back up in black and white with normal revived health.  I don't know what happens if you die from spit or a tank or something though.

I remember I was playing as a Smoker on multiplayer once.
I managed to snag a survivor who was straggling behind the rest. I almost took her out.
Aaaaaaallmost. The rest of the survivors realised how badly they'd fucked up and one of them dashed back to free my victim.

And forgot to kill me. I didn't get any other good chokes off, though.

Also incapped by a tank is instant game over. Also they seem to take less damage from melee weapons, but I dunno.

Figured, hey, maybe I can achieve Tank Burger. I did manage to take down a witch without too much hassle with the SCAR, though. That was kinda nerve-wracking.

Sounds like last man on earth is really good deadstop and skeeting training then.  I oughta try it out.  Even though I tend to avoid non-vs modes.

I don't know about skeeting, but I'm guessing deadstopping is using the shove to stop hunters and jockeys mid-leap. I 'm not too bad with hunters, but I can't get the timing down for jockeys.

And of course, the director loves to send jockeys.

Perhaps something in the vein of "skeet shooting", as in shooting at a moving target that's flying through the air?

Hah perhaps I play on too many American servers that use weird lingo.  A deadstop is from L4D1 and the guess is right, it's bashing a hunter with the melee when they are in the air about to hit you with a pounce.  There used to be an achivement for it.

A skeet Is almost the same, only it's shooting a hunter out of the air while it's pouncing at you.  Kinda like skeet shooting.

Both of those I heard far more often in L4D1 than 2, but I still hear it now and then, so I assumed they are still known terms.  In l4D2 you can do them to a jockey as well as a hunter.  Though a hunter is harder.
