The characters are horrible (Rochelle in particular..)
I respectfully disagree (except for Rochelle; I don't really like her either). Ellis and Keith (and to a lesser extent Billy Gibbs, Jr., Coach, and Nick (who I always choose to play as)) are some of my favorite video game characters.

the music is HORRIBLE
Once again, I disagree. I enjoy the music. Though some of it isn't typical of a zombie apocalypse game, I like how it establishes the setting. I do think they could have gone a creepier route while maintaining the "genre" of music, however.

Some of the fun of L4D2 isn't so much the campaign mode as the other modes, especially now that Mutations are part of the game. I played Scavenge for the first time the other day (after having the game since release), and it was surprisingly fun. It's like a quick Versus game. I was initially put off from playing it because I was under the impression it would be like the scavenging in the Mall Finale.  But it's actually a lot more fun than that. Going all-melee in Survival or really any mode is also pretty fun.

I dislike how they reduced most common Infected to looking so similar in the second game. The Passing attempted to "fix" this somewhat, though, with its wedding Infected (including a Witch bride) and Midnight Riders fans. I do like how they added in a female Boomer and the Spitter (which has added importance in Scavenge mode) to further "represent" women Infected, even if they are both ugly as shit (seriously; in the first game, if you were a woman before being infected, you would always become either a Witch or a Common).

I do think they need to update both of the games with additional content more often, but I suppose Mutations are meant to help with that in L4D2.

The music actually consists of tons of interlacing different-pitched sound files that is made for every player by the music Director based on the same information the AI Director uses to change the game to be more thrilling (health, stress, play style and the amount of zombies for example). This I think is absolutely fascinating and I wish more games will keep experimenting with it. Also, cool fact, when you die and the "You're dead" music fades out, you start hearing the individual soundtrack of the player you're spectating.

One aspect of the music that I find particularly interesting is that it gives important information. Obviously the tank, horde and witch themes do just this, but there's also the different "bacteria" themes of every Special Infected that are heard every time one spawns and other cool little sound cues like that. Without even paying attention to the music, your ears start to pick up these music cues and you start behaving accordingly to the situation without even noticing.

Yeah, I kind of love the music in L4D games.

Eh, personally I prefer L4D1.  Something about L4D2... just doesn't click with me.

Yea, there are more zombies and all... but I guess the characters and the general feel of the game, for me, just don't give as much of a... 'survivor' feeling. They give more of a 'drive-by' feeling.  The brightness/daylight doesn't help and the intro definitely doesn't help.  >.>

I might also be more prejudiced due to the fact that 2 or 3 of the special infected AI attacking in sync has much more of a chance of hitting the 'you lose' button.

At least in L4D1, you can pull through with 2-3 decent players and that 1 guy who tends to shoot us in the back on advanced... or that 1 guy who tends to be away from the group getting into trouble.... Actually makes it more fun, taking the risk of going back to save that other person and making it back with him... then shooting him in the face as the door gets shut if he is black and white.
And the bot AI is much more abusable easily manipulated to be as useful as a decent player....

I'd have to agree. the sound cue / music thing is great on both counts.

Took advantage of the latest sale, and was just wondering...

Did they actually make the bots worse than L4D, or is it just me?

I also love the music in the games. If you notice, in movies, the music usually tips you off when things are about to happen. They replicated this feel in L4D(2), and its the best combat information source I have ever encountered in a game. Period.

I guess I just miss the original L4D music. For example, if I compare the game menu music from both games then I'd MUCH rather go with L4D. It's so much more apocalyptic, you know? L4D2's version is just.. too light. Not to mention some of the in-game zombie fighting music is just poorly selected (I'm talking about places like that gazebo with the stereos that you can turn on, and areas with jukeboxes. That is far from zombie fighting music to me.)

And is it just me or are there MUCH less "OH SHIT!" moments in L4D2? In L4D you've got the plane crashing in front of you, you've got the being swarmed while an elevator comes down thing, and it just seems like there are so many more zombies swarming you at one time in the first one. Yeah L4D2 has some interesting settings, but they're all kind of anti-climactic.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As somebody already mentioned it just sort of felt like a.. drive by, or something. It just didn't feel as involved. Also I HATE the swamp campaign. WHYYYYY WOULD YOU DO THAT

[DFC] The Magnificent Johbson, if I haven't added any of you. Playing with random people just doesn't cut it with L4D2.

You guys might have already known this, I didn't, Valve made a poll, asking if they should make Realism Versus a permanent gamemode, it came back yes, so they are. This is why I love Valve, I seriously don't think anyone else would have done this.

Yea, realism vs is awesome. I loved playing it.

Anyone else play this follow the liter yet?  It also seems pretty good seems like it was designed for pugs.  Instead of folks wandering every which way with no semblance of organization everybody is going in one direction at once, sorta forcing some teamwork into scavenge.

Makes it harder for infected, but its not like smoking that one idiot that ran off by himself was very fulfilling anyway.

I really like Follow the Liter.

It DUMBS DOWN Scavenge mode.  And I love it for that.  I didn't LIKE scavenge mode.  It was too hard to organize a team.  So, now your only real decisions are "Do we all go together" or "Do we go 2 and 2".  (I've found that going all together, and then walking back instead of throwing cans, is ALWAYS the best solution.  Always.  In all maps.)

I would say that it decreases difficulty for the infected, but it makes both survivor and infected play more satisfying.  If you kill people as infected, you know it's because you hit them good, instead of picking them off.  If you win pretty hard as survivors, you know it's because you had good tactics and shooting, not because their team had some whackball who wouldn't listen to orders and made bad strategic decisions:  There no longer IS strategy.  And sometimes, that's cool.

I don't think this belongs as a permanent game mode.  But it used to be, nobody hardly played scavenge (there were rarely games to join).  Now, lots of people play Follow the Liter...and I'm having fun with it.  When it goes away, I'll have fun with it again in a few months, but I won't play scavenge in the meantime.  It's all cool.  Oh yeah...and it's nice to play a game mode with other people who aren't total pros.  That's one reason scavenge sucked before.  If you didn't play it all the time, you got owned by people who did.
