-Don't level up quickly, leveling is your enemy and will do more harm then good.
Leveling up is very useful actually, especially in the beginning. Basically, you want to get to over 70 hp as fast as you can, as there isn't a single attack beam that does more than 70 damage (except the wand of death, of course), and having an extra turn to react is incredibly vital.

Leveling up as fast as you can allows very dangerous monsters to be generated while you're still lacking a good AC. After my first couple ascensions I started to let my pet get most of the earlier kills and my survival rate went way up. You won't have early encounters with those wands that often but you will always encounter lots of mumakil and leocrotta when you're not prepared for them if you level fast.

My general rule is to be around level 4 by the time I finish the mines and reach the sokoban zoo and my ascension rate is around 1 in 3. Trust me on this, rely on your pet to get kills early on and elbereth to get you out of a jam and you won't find youself being killed by monsters as often. A vengeful RNG you can't help but monster related deaths are always preventable.

(And yeah, I left alot out to not reveal spoilers)

Hey, has anyone else tried to make a dwarf fortress in NetHack?

Personally BloodBeard, I hesitate to do the Mines until after I do Sokoban. Each floor of the Gnomish Mines is guaranteed to generate 1 tool. Among the tools that can be generated, are the frost/fire horns, which can be blown into to fire beams of ice/fire respectively which do 13-66 damage. Every dwarf and gnome can use these tools, and if one just so happens to spawn, they are SURE to pick it up before you, and one blast, and boom, you're dead.

The tip with the pets is nice, but I'll take my chances with the Leocrotta.

The odds of getting one of those horns in entire game isn't good let alone in the mines. To each his own I guess.

This isn't some paranoid theory I've devised, I've died because of those horns twice. Assuming they aren't there is just asking for trouble...

Then those deaths were purely bad luck because the odds of getting one of those horns in a mine level is less then 1%. There are ALOT of tools and those horns have a low propability.

I've also been away from NH for a while so I checked it and the wands do 6-36 damage.

I screwed up the first bit, but wands do 6-36 damage, but horns do 6-66 damage.

Horns do the same damage as wands.

http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Frost_horn

Quote
The frost horn is mostly identical to a wand of cold, except it can be recharged an unlimited number of times (up to a maximum of 20 charges at once), and deals 6 to 66 damage rather than 6 to 36 (depending on the circumstance).

Or to be 100% sure we can crack open nethack and look at its entrails.

I happen to have the source code handy and I found this:

Quote
fire horn      Acts like a wand of fire.
 * frost horn      Acts like a wand of cold.

There's no direct damage quote but everything I can find basically says they have same effect as the wands. I don't know where the 6-66 thing came from.

Looks like an innocent typo has thrown us all into conflict.

Anyway, someone should change that.
