Sweet. I've seen some traumatic injuries, and I love seeing them modeled more intricately than the typical hit points system. I can't get enough details.

The digestive tract, particularly the intestines, is sensitive to pressure and pain. Squeezing any sensitive body part that isn't normally even allowed contact with the air would be quite painful, even if you didn't use enough force to register on an external tissue.

Plus, exposing any internal organ is going to cause shock in the form of faintness, nausea and reduced consciousness. If you lay it to the bone, just gashing your hand can make you throw up (personal experience talking). The digestive tract might should be more closely tied to nausea centric shock, but it's not unrealistic to see it come from other places.

Just knowing that you are injured can wipe you out worse than the injury itself, if you aren't expecting it, and I get so tired of game and TV heroes who can walk around with a dozen swords in their chest, so long as they want to keep going and their legs still work. DF averst this annoyance so hard it comes out on the other side, in Awesome Town.

Toughness should be a factor though. We don't want our Champion Wrestlers to throw up and faint every time they cut their finger now do we.

I thought that the lack of a [KILN] reaction tag might have been an oversight. Hmm, perhaps [WOOD_FURNACE] also?

@pruvan:

Naturally not but felblood is right. Also getting a Bolt/arrow stuck in your body is a fatal injury cause it induces instantly a shock. The Storys where heros walk with 1 or more Arrows in theyr chest come from middleage knights where the arrow got stuck in the armor but didnt go throught the chain and/or the gambeson.

It would be nice to have something reaction-like for all the workshops, and it's requested fairly often, but it's not going to happen yet.

I'd say that he nausea responce is unrelated to pain and more related to endemic shock (what is that parallel nervesystem called again, it handles involuntary functions? systemic? ah: autonomic!)

still
From personal experience I can say that dysfunction of the autonomous colon nerves causes serious distress
(: comparable to the musclespasms resulting from epilepsy but more localized... also guts don't complain about being over-strained like voluntary muscles do.)
I've yet to black out from gut-pain though, although there have been occasions that vision blurred and coordinated movement became increasingly difficult.

OK, it's official.  From now on, whenever I see somebody on an RPG board bitching about how one game's health system is less realistic than their favorite, I'm just going to point them towards DF 8)

If dwarf mode combat reports do go in, might be nice to have a separate button for them... 'a' for announcements, 'A' for combat announcements, or something.  Would be a lot more useful if they were timestamped, and also if we could zoom to a message, but still.

Filter-able announcements came up in a couple Suggestions threads a while back.

One thing I don't quite understand. Will all these new ways of hurting dwarves mean that they are more likely to get hurt? I mean, now that dwarves can be poked, cut, burned and mangled on their skin, bones, muscles and organs, arent they more likely to get injured because they have more places to be injured?

Probably not. Most of these locations already existed (the current list of body parts is pretty huge), it's just that the new version will handle the damage in much more realistic ways.

After all, they still have to get hit to get injured, and the chances of that probably won't go up too much. And the chances of them being seriously injured might even go down. Although that's still in the air, since we don't really know how the combat system works yet. We'll have to wait and see what happens when Toady really gets to testing all of this new code.

One thing that comes to mind: what, if anything, will change with the wounds page on the unit info?  I don't mean on the back end, I mean what the user sees.

Like right now, if a dwarf's left leg gets blown off, it'll have left upper leg in grey...and left lower leg...and left foot...and all five left toes.  I really, really hope it doesn't keep showing every single little part when the number of such parts is increasing by an order of magnitude.

I apologize if this has already been answered, but I can't find any.  I am known for my ability to miss things right in front of me though :-[

Mmm... I'm not sure if it was mentioned if he was planning to categorize the body parts page. I think I recall it somewhere...

But yeah, the way it is is quite annoying. Especially since if you're not looking properly, you might mistake a normal limb for a nonexistant one since the colours are similar.

Ironically, that probably resembles real life... people fighting thinking that their limbs are still there when it's already gone.

I seem to remember part of the point of this being that wounds would be tracked seperately, so I expect the changes would result in a list of wounds (potentially with a detailed description) instead of a list of parts and a damage colour code.

Though we'd still need some way of visualising creatures like the antmen and such - perhaps a more detailed physical decription instead of just a list of parts? I know Toady mentioned working on descriptive text for some of the stuff (like hair and colouration) so maybe this is part of the same thing?

It would be cool to get that old 7 cities of gold style vibe in there, where you could explore new areas, name them, find important features and report back and so on, slowly building up maps and all that.  There aren't nearly enough expedition (vs. pure exploration) games like that these days, even if it was flawed itself.
oh god this. I loved 7 cities as a child and haven't seen any even semi-respectable exploration games since.
