Prince Harry's racist remark about a Pakistani member of his army platoon has prompted widespread criticism.
The prince issued an apology after the News of the World published a video diary in which he calls one of his then Sandhurst colleagues a "Paki".
An Army spokesperson said it took the allegations "very seriously" and were investigating.
Cabinet minister John Denham said it was "offensive" and the Ramadhan Foundation called the prince a "thug".
St James's Palace said he had used the term about a friend and without malice.
In a statement the Army said: "The Army does not tolerate inappropriate behaviour in any shape or form," a spokesperson for the force added.
Opinion:
I think what's happening here is that all those buffoons asking for an apology on the grounds of the prince not being tolerant or being racist are the ones committing the acts of intolerance or racism themselves. Using the god argument here, you cannot call someone a racist or a "thug" for carelessly calling someone a racist term without committing segregation yourself. It's obvious that the Prince was acting more human than anything; calling a close buddy something vulgar isn't something new, especially in the army.
Yet they've got the tabloids and morons complaining of racism when it wasn't racism at all. If you call your friends your "bitches", it only ever becomes an insult when someone else starts complaining about it. They have no real right to complain over what you call your friends, and if your friends don't care, why should they?
I don't think it's a secret that I think that westerners have this racism complex, that they feel this strange, inexplicable need to have to feel inferior and jump on anything that might approach racism (especially anything remotely related to Africa). It's not wrong, but it does get out of control. The fact of the matter is that the best way to resolve differences between race, sex, and gender is by talking about it, taking initiatives to resolve it. Attempting to silence everyone and anyone who makes a racist statement is ridiculous. I believe total tolerance comes when anyone and everyone can make a racist statement and no one cares AND everyone is still treated equally.
Of course, I also believe that will never happen and people are genetically programmed to segregate.
