Attempting to be gentlemanly while killing or maiming someone seems to be quite hypocritical, don't you think? I wonder if dead people care if you treated them with respect while killing them...

Why am I defending this? I like conflict! Conflict = profit opportunity. More conflict + more traditions in conflict = great profits. It's good all round.

Your right! The military wouldn't want to hurt someone's feelings!

Actually, that's not even remotely what I argued.  What I said was that a modern military will view small incidents of racially charged differently, because it prevents people from coming home in body bags.

So, here's your posted given the same treatment you gave mine.
What, you think nasty names are more important then getting people killed?

This is like the time John McCain said "That one" or Obama talked about people clinging to guns and religion. It's just the media trying to create a sensation because everyone is too busy watching and reading real news(ie:The world economy).

I thought somebody here would realize that Paki is insulting because it does not understand why Pakistan is called Pakistan.

Pakistan is called Pakistan because it represents the five groups that are within Pakistan:
Punjab, Afghania (also known as North-West Frontier Province), Kashmir, Sindh, and Balochistan. These groups belong in Pakistan because of the fact that they're all Muslims. (Its literal meaning is "Land of the Pure", but also, the fact that it was an acronym was another the reason why this name was chosen [and the one most stressed at celebrations of Pakistan's indepedence day].)

Yes, I'm deeply offended that the Prince didn't even bother to do any research on what Pakistan actually is. Come on, is it that hard to check Wikipedia?

C'mon, I'm a nerd, and I've never heard that before. Why would the Prince look up Pakistan on Wikipedia? I never look up any country on Wikipedia, unless I'm prepared for information overload.

I don't think "looking up derogatory terms on Wikipedia" comes up very high on people's lists.

Not the derogatory term Paki, unless I'm mistaken, but the actual country Pakistan. Although, unless you wanted information overload, I have no idea why you would want that either. I only ever use Wikipedia for school, and my brain still aches for hours after :P

Then I don't understand. Why would the Prince not know what Pakistan is? It's a pretty "DUH" point that Paki is a short for Pakistani. Nowhere is it mentioned that he doesn't know at least that much...

Looking at the post again... it makes no sense at all. :-\

"I thought somebody here would realize that Paki is insulting because it does not understand why Pakistan is called Pakistan."

Can someone translate that for me? Who's "it"? Why do we need to understand why Pakistan is called Pakistan? Do we need to understand why Mongolia is called Mongolia? And why is an abbreviation insulting because it doesn't "understand" the full word? Is "states" an insult then?

From my experience it's considered derogatory not just because it's shortened "Pakistan" or the term leaves out some two parts of land no one even gives a shite about. It's  offensive because in England (London, in particular) it's nearly always meant with contempt as in "Those twats who keep flooding our country and own every fucking grocery store" I'm not British myself but I used to live in London and very often "Paki" meant a muslim person in general.
Yes, it is offensive and everyone who uses this term is perfectly aware of that fact (maybe excluding children).
A LOT of white Brits use this term but "behind the scenes", when no one's looking and they're  among friends.

People get on television all the time and say Arab when it is actually Arabian. I refuse to see why this incident is very significant, espicially since the British are called Brits, Australians Ausies and New Zealanders Kiwis.

Why is the Negro offensive? It just means black in Spanish.

DJ: Because whether or not a word is offensive is also determined by who used it when, how, and with what intention.

Yes, the word stems from a Latin word for a color (niger); Italian and Spanish and French use almost the same word still (negro, noir) etc. Hoever in German and English, I'd argue the word "nigger"/"Neger" has been used with racist intention for over 100 years.

So why might some US racists say "He's a nigger" instead of "He's a guy with black skin"? Because the second version makes the target sound like a human being.

Now in a military, the commander should be able to rely on his soldiers working together efficiently, without racial hatred or similar idiocy affecting his troops' performance. He must be able to rely on each of his soldiers following orders, and/or risking his life to save that of a comrade.
Racist remarks within a unit would make the above ideal unlikely, which is my main argument for why the Prince should get a flogging on public TV for his idiotic statement.
Another reason is the simple fact that he may one day be the King of all brits, if the Monarchy survives that long. This "all brits" includes not only the white-skinned alcoholics and fat ugly chicks who seem to inhabit the British isles, but also the culturally vibrant and colorful immigrant scene.

Notice my semi-random use of cynicism and please do add a grain of salt or two.
